"St. Basil's Cathedral"©1989 by Ami Simms
This is my most recent pictorial quilt. Guess I better get busy on another
one. (That's OK, I have an idea; I'm just looking for the time....) This is
St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square in Moscow---with some artistic license.
Two of the church's domes are reversed. I put one hiding behind the building
in the front and got rid of one of the domes in the front because it was way
too difficult to make. There are over 3,000 individually appliqued pieces of
hand dyed fabric in this quilt. Yes, I dyed the fabric myself and have the
matching underwear to prove it. (I always try to throw in some little
something to soak up every drop of dye. Seems so wasteful if I don't.
Underwear fits the bill. Since I dye in the laundry area of the basement and
never ever seem to get caught up it's certainly always handy.) It took me
three years to make the quilt, but during those three years I also wrote two
books and cleaned the oven once.
