"The Bikini Quilt"

©1993 by Ami Simms

My mother also calls this one "Boobs &Bellybuttons." The pattern for the block is almost 2,000 years old. And, although the ancient Romans were the first ones to wear bikinis, the pattern of setting the blocks together is mine. While I was doing research for Classic Quilts: Patchwork Designs From Ancient Rome, I noticed that the Hourglass pattern turned sideways looked like bikini tops. (Turn your head sideways and you'll see that the bikini tops look like hourglasses!) Threads magazine was kind enough to ask me to write an article for them on triangular patchwork and I asked them if they'd like this quilt to illustrate the pattern. They said no. I made it anyway and they published it.

Find the pattern in "Beyond Square Quilt Blocks" Threads, August/September 1993, p. 36-38.
