Pasedena Grate Challenge

This will all make more sense if you read the April 2000 edition of the Ami-Simms-Newsletter which you can do if you sign up to get my free monthly emailed newsletter.

These magnificent cast iron grates surround trees on Dayton Street in Pasedena, California. Wouldn't they make swell quilting patterns?

Special thanks to Deanne and for taking the trouble to photograph these swell grates form me. Deanne shares this story about her photo op:

As I was bending over to take a close-up of the grate with my behind sticking out, mind you, my behind is not attached to a "skinny-minnie," I heard someone clearing his voice. As I was straightening up, I immediately thought it was one of the many vagrants stopping to bother me. Well, once I turned around, I noticed it was a policeman, watching me with a half smirk on his face.

There I was, dressed professionally (uh, let me clarify) in a business suit with a camera in my hands, taking pictures of the ground (???). I was so intent on taking pictures, I hadn't even noticed him walking up to me! Anyway, of course he asked what I was doing and when I told him I was taking pictures for a quilting buddie who thought these grates would make great quilting patterns, you can imagine the look on his face.

I felt I needed to explain more, so I did. Then he mentioned that his wife quilts and wanted to join a group in the area! Whew!
