She has also spent an enormous amount of effort putting those hints into readable form. This is a fun book to thumb through to pick up tips on preparing fabric, designing, drafting, hand and machine sewing, quilting, and caring for quilts. There is even a tip on how to retrieve metallic objects from behind the stove!"
The Professional Quilter

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

QUILT CARE

Washing Quilts

"Quilts are best laundered in cold water, with a mild soap and very little agitation. A bathtub, scrubbed clean, is an ideal place to gently wash even the largest quilt. Make sure the soap is completely dissolved before the quilt is placed in the water, and rinse the quilt at least twice. After the final rinse, gently push the quilt against the side of the tub to let more water out, then carefully scoop it into a plastic laundry basket for the trip to the washing machine. A short spin will remove most of the water without stressing the stitches.

Wet quilts can be lifted out of the tub more easily by placing several rolled bath towels under the quilt. Lift the towels and the quilt will follow.

A child's wading pool is a good place to wash quilts, especially if they will be dried outside.

Dry freshly laundered quilts outside on an old sheet, bright side down. Cover the back with a thin sheet to protect it from sunlight and passing birds."
