Eric and Sue...how awful to have a broken bone anytime, but especially
at holiday time! I'm glad he is on the mend, and thanks for getting
back to us so soon!

My featherweight sings the music of my mother from my childhood. The
little clackety-clack brings her back to me every time!!

To whom it may concern:

I am not an expert on sewing machines, so please forgive my ignorance.

I am a custom hat maker, and I need to find a sewing machine to sew in
sweat bands on felt hats, I think the specs are as follows

Singer model 1107

I would appreciate any help in either finding this machine or helping me
figure out if this is the correct model #. If any one needs to contact
me please feel free.

Appreciate the site but when I get 50 messages a day and am very busy
with my business, I don't have time to run down the list of messages to
find some pertinent information. The purpose of the site is stated in
the first paragraph but I keep finding stuff that really doesn't belong
there....

Be helpful if the Subject matter could state something like "Personal
info", "Story", "E-bay", "FW 201 INFO" or some better
categories so I could choose easily and quickly those that I need or
want to read.

Just a thought. PP

Hi,
I'm having a bit of a clean up and found Gran's old singer. I have been
able to identify most of the attachments (and to my joy find most work on my
machine) but couldn't Simanco part 25527 until I did a search and found
your site. I now know it is a seam guage, but where do I attach it to? Also
is binder 121464 used to attach or make bindings? But what really ahs me
puzzled is the mystery part in the singer box (see photo-it's next to part
25527 to give you a size guide) - I can see no name or number on it , but
the other attachments don't seem to be missing it going by the pictures.
Can you help?
Delwyn

Excuse my ignorance, what is "Cutters" and where do you find it?

Subject: Re: The Human Quilt

Hi Feathers~ Hey, did anyone see me on Simply Quilts on Wednesday? I was
one of the 800+ people who participated in the Human Quilt in Sisters Oregon.
I
was one of the purple squares. It was so much fun being a part of that
activity. I was in Sisters for the Quilter's Affair with my best friend and
our
husbands. I was the only one of our group brave enough to get up at dawn and
trek out to the high school football field and it was cold! Alex Anderson was
wearing shorts and I was dressed like the Michlein Man. Anyhow, it was a lot
of fun and I have my purple square as a souvenir as well as a poster and plot
mat marking my very own space. I had my fabric holding neighbor hold my piece
up long enough to get a photo of the underneath part of the quilt during the
taping. I wonder if there were any other FWFers under there with me? Linda

Subject: Skipping Stitches....
Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2003 12:07:48 -0500

Greetings to the list,

For some unknown reason, my beloved Featherweight has been skipping the
occasional stitch. I have tried everything I could think of (changing
needles, changing needle sizes, re-threading, checking for burrs, cleaning,
etc.) but I'm still having trouble. It seems to happen on finer fabrics
more often (tightly woven shirtings and such), but it's also happening on
looser woven fabrics, like wool coatings.

I remember other folks sending notes regarding skipped stitches, but I don't
remember ever seeing any of the remedies. Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks in advance....Richard

In response to your 'clear oil' changing color. I am of the opinion
that when clear oil change color it is simply mineral oil...a petroleum
product that has no rust or corrosion inhibitors...good sewing machine
oil should be one of the new synthetic oils that doesn't evaporate and
has advance rust and corrosion additives. Most sewing machines are
packed with a sample of mineral oil which is cheap at the time to serve
you. May other oils such as 3-in-1 oil and other petroleum oils will
leave a sticky varnish that is hard to remove and causes increased wear
on the machine. So many advances have been made with the new synthetic
lubricants that make the far superior to the old petroluem based
products.

Bruce and Connie,

I'm glad to hear you didn't lose your place. I know
how you must feel about the trees and land. We lived
in the Julian area in one of those 600 homes lost. This
fire was so devastating to so many. Best of luck in
restoring your property. We are now in a rental in
San Diego, and it is so hard to go back up to our site,
which was completely consumed. Looks like an atom
bomb blast site.

I second the thoughts on the grand list here. People
have been so good and kind, and my "consolation" is
a FW, now on its way from Glenn. The insurance is
paying, so I am very excited. Now to go buy a spool
of thread, so I can try it out when it arrives. Two
members have even offered to send me some fabric
to begin a new stash. And I only signed on a couple
of weeks ago, so I'm not an oldtimer here. What a
group!

Thanks again to all of you.

Cheers, Kate (aka Erin)

Subject: Isaac Singer Biography

Hi, Alex!

I just wanted to say that I had read your Isaac Singer biography on
www.sewalot.com when you first wrote it, and I never got a chance to
thank you for the in equal measures, laughter and information.

Your contributions to the Featherweight list have the same delightful
mix. And although you do write like as if you have been everywhere
and seen everything, I see by your own mini-auto-biography that you
were a teenager in 1976 which makes you approximately the same age as
myself, a mere pup.

So, you must have been weaned on James Herriot as I was, and I hope
you find it flattering if I say that the most sparkling of his style
can be found in yours. I won't go so far as to say that there are
fewer mad cows in your stories though.

All the best from east coast Canada.

Are there ever any FW maintenance classes in the Fort Worth area here in
Texas? Or do any of your instructors ever make a CD or video of your
classes? That would be wonderful if you did so the rest of us could at
least view your instructions.

Thanks and may I add a Happy New Year wish to everyone!

Hi Feathers~ When I do my FW maintenance class, one of the first things I do
is to have each student run his or her machine for about 5 seconds as fast as
it will go. The whole class listens. Each machine has its own individual
sound. Some clatter, some grind, and some perfectly purr. I tell the class
that they have different sounds because, kind of like automobiles, some have
5000
miles on them and some have 100,000 miles on them! I also want the students
to "hear" the difference in their machine AFTER application of new oil and
grease and lint removal. Most always we will hear them purr at the end of
class.
I, too, call the different machine sounds Featherweight Music and love to
listen to it! Linda Cover in CA

Hi FWF:

I am new to this list and new to owning a FW--have not even named mine yet.
It is a bit of a stretch from an modern electronic (my #1) to a 221 (my #2)
but I am enjoying getting acquainted. Maybe my priority numbers will change
places!

This is a response to Judy Howe, also of Washington State, who requested
packing instructions. This is the site address:

Happy New Year.

cold with a bit of snow on the ground.
