Hmmm, the shop I worked at had a sign that said pick your machine
up within *30* days of being informed it's ready or we'll sell it for
repair costs. While, in practice, they were much more liberal,
you might look at it from the shopkeeper's view. We took
in 15-20 machines a week for repair, on average. If everyone
waits just one month to pick them up, that's close to 100
machines the boss has to store. Plus, I was the one who had
to pick through them to find the older unclaimed ones at
the back, and that means moving a lot of heavy metal!

Elnas: I only have two, but one is a Grasshopper, and I
like it. You need to make sure it has the knee bar, and
it's also helpful to have the speed reducer and darning
foot if you want it for quilting. 'Hoppers orignally came
with both red and green oil/kerosene cans, but good
luck finding those with it still. The bobbin hook needs
kerosene, not oil, for some reason I can't recall, but
it does advise you clearly in the manual about this.

Still, few manuals seem to exist. Check out Cindy
Peters at Stitches in Time or Linda Winkens at
Relics for a manual copy if needed. Amy someone
also had a Grasshopper page you might find with
a Google search.

Just in case any of you missed the latest worm virus news, watch out for
emails that come to you with an attachment and say in the body of the
message: "The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a
binary attachment.

"
DO NOT open this attachment.
This is terribly destructive, apparently, and I also heard that
Microsoft has a patch for it on their website but I haven't looked at
that yet. =20
You Mac users, lucky dogs, do not have to worry about these things!

For Nancy: I used the 1/4" foot for years, successfully, before I bought
a special foot with a little guard on it, which I much prefer. I bought
it from Stepping Stones, I think! I sew a much more accurate line now,
and at my age that's very needed.

Subject: Tracing table

For Joy who wanted info on a tracing table. I have a sink in the basement.
I put a trouble light (from the garage) down in the sink and place a sheet of
acrylic across the top of the sink. Works for me.

Gerald said about repainting machines

>I know Graham and some of the others don't like to hear that kind of stuff.

Just like to make my position clear on this.

I can have no objection to what folk do with their own property. All
I like to point out is that in my view that repainting should be
restricted to poor condition machines which other wise would be an
eyesore and never to rare, collectors' models.

Gerald does a great job, I've recommended him to others and have even
sent machines directly to him from my customers for repainting.

The problem with re-painted machines is highlighted by the red one
currently on sale on Ebay. Lots of chat about how rare red machines
are, astronomic suggestions of worth, comment about how the decals
are intact (they should be, they're brand new) and not a word about
the cheap and nasty non-Featherweight replacement motor that's been
stuck on the rear.

If you come back with the serial number I can give you the
day/month/year, factory, number in the manufacturing batch etc

BEWARE

There is another scamster now operating out of England.

This is the ploy

He trolls the Ebay bidding on rare machines and mails offering an
identical machine for half the price.

If the prospective buy wants to see a picture he is sent the one
from the auction saying that the other machine is totally identical

He then requires payment by Western Union (untraceable).

Once payment has been made he then requires extra for shipping.

Once he's got that, he then decides it's not safe to ship and
requires more money for courier delivery.

Yes, I know, warning flags all the way but one experienced collector
has already been taken for big bucks.

Be on your guard.

Never respond to non-auction offers made via Ebay's links

Never deal with anyone who can't provide proper pictures

Never pay by Western Union
