Well, Linda, it sounds fabulous! So...did you read instead of quilting,
or read AND quilt?! I think you will love the Alaskan trip. I went on
the "Inner Passage" cruise on the Norweigian Wind and it was just
beautiful. I would recommend that little cruise to anybody!
Thanks for the feedback!

Subject: 301 lowering feed dogs

If you have a manual, it will show you how. There is a large knurled screw
right under the feed dog cover off to the right.

It has a slot in it, but you should be able to turn in by your fingers.

If you don't have a manual, please get one. This is a fine machine and
deserves the best of care, oiled and lubed properly, this machine will last your
lifetime, and longer.

I am using my Mother's 301, purchased new, in 1953, in Long Beach, CA, when
they first came out. In 51 years this machine has gone through Momma, Me, and
my Daughter, from who's greedy little hands I wrestled (rescued) it from.

It has only been in for professional servicing one time, and had my Daughter
brought it to me first, that visit would not have been necessary. She took
it in to a local repair place, with large signs posted reading, "After 90 days,
machines not redeemed will be sold." Luckily, I went in to buy fabric and
spotted the machine there sitting in the "Ready to go" section, and when I
inquired about it, was told that I was the forth person to ask when the machine
would be for sale. You better believe I was on the phone to my daughter telling
her that the machine had just about overstayed it's visit. At two days to go
I went in and redeemed the machine, because if this machine had been sold, I
would have been broken hearted.

For servicing, no major repairs, the cost was $99.00.

When my daughter suggested repaying me for paying for the repairs I politely
told her to forget it, the machine was staying with me. She did.

Hello, I live in Kentucky and own several featherweights. I would
like to be a member of your club if I knew the guidelines. Are
there any local chapters in Louisville? Thank you for any help
you can provide. Sincerely, Alexis Borden

Subject: Dropping the feed-dogs on the 301

To Alice, who asked how to lower the feed dogs on the 301: There is a little
knob under the fold up table, near the bobbin. Turn one way to lower, and
the other way to raise the feed dogs. Try it, it's cool! Mindy

To Alice, to drop the feed dogs lift up the extension bed and you will see a
long thumb screw, turn that and the dogs will drop......frish in snowy,
sleeting, freezing south jersey!!!!!!!!!! I WANT
SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This weather is putting a BIG damper on my
flea marketing and auction hunts....my last great find was a pfaff 360

Subject: Elna Grasshopper

Hi everyone,

On a FW-"related" topic:

Does anyone know anything about the Elna Grasshopper?

I have a line on one but I don't know if I'm interested until I know more about
it, and the owner knows less about it than I do. I think it's darn cute, and I
love the color, but I don't know yet if I want to pay to ship it if it'll just
wind up being a conversation piece rather than a working machine.

I have two FW's, a new Singer Quantum 5430, and a '70s Kenmore. I piece quilts
on the FWs and machine applique on the Quantum (the Kenmore collects dust, but I
made my wedding gown on it, so I'll never get rid of it.) I'd like another
machine for machine quilting (the Quantum doesn't have much room under the arm,
and I'm too nervous about burning out the precious little motors on the FWs, not
to mention setting fire to my batting with the light.)

So: any opinions on the Elna Grasshopper?

Thanks in advance,
Sarah

Subject: 401 or 500 ZZ foot for 1/4" seams

Thanks for someone mentioning that the ZZ feet from the 500 will work on
the 301 for accurate piecing. I used the one off my 401a and it worked
very well, particularly where I have had much trouble sewing over an intersection
of 6 seams (squares and triangles) with my Little Foot. Much as I like
the Little Foot, it seemed to have problems with that intersection and
I ended up doing a lot of ripping. Only one seam had to be resewn the other
night. Great thing to find out as I have approximately 20 blocks to do
of the  "Old Favorite" block (Jan 24th-25th of TPP calendar) or "Fannies
Old Favorite" in Havig's Carrie Hall book.
Still will use the Little Foot where it works best, tho.
