Subject: Sewing For Shelters on a FW
Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2004 10:08:01 -0800
This is slightly OT.
I had a few folks ask about making bedding for animal shelters. It all
started when I had a dear cat put to sleep. My vet knows I'm a quilter and
had a *little quilty thing* on the table when we arrived. It was very crude,
nothing but squares of knit fabric ZZ together. To me at that time, it was
beautiful. Something besides a cold table for my kitty's final moments. In
my distressed state I had not thought to take a blankie. This started my
investigation into vets/shelters if they would want any kind of bedding.
Some do, some don't. It must be very washable, durable, and donated with the
understanding it may have a very short life span ;) In some cases an adopted
animal takes his/her blankie with them to their new home. If you would like
to do something like this, visit the vets/shelters with a sample. Good sizes
are 22 X 22 and up. I work with a local ferret rescue/shelter, they never
have too much bedding. Each adopted ferret takes at least 3 blankies with
them. For those that wish to donate to a human cause, the fire/police
departments in some areas keep small quilts in their vehicles for kids in a
traumatic situation and appreciate those. These folks don't care if you make
these items on your Featherweight, but you will enjoy it more if you do ;))

For the record, I only buy bobbins from the specialists on our list like
Jim Sorrell and Glenn Williams. Always perfect!

Subject: Elna bobbins
Someone mentioned several years ago that the old Elna bobbins would fit
the FW or 301s. I looked at a Elna Lotus SP today and the bobbin is too
'high' to fit a FW or 301. Which model Elna was supposed to have the same
size?
