I'm with Virgie too!
I sew and tinker with my old girls (sewing machines) for sanity from my life
teaching school, helping my parents, and shopping, cleaning, and paying
bills for my 86 year old aunt. Add to my life this year planning a wedding
with my only daughter. My dh and I do what we have to do for today. If there
is time for cleaning it might get done, or then again, if something else
more fun, or more important arises like new fabric, or a new project well
there I go....
Right now in my living room sits my featherweight card table, two
featherweights and a 301 I just acquired. I got time to play a bit today. I
will keep one of the SMs out for my next piecing project. I will leave it up
until my project is done!

I got 2 of those machines both machines I had trouble with in the end. that
post that holds the presser foot both machines broke I could take the foot
and turn the thing around. The machines were only used by me. Infact the
last one broke while I was sewing around a zipper. I always swore by Singer
but I am begining to wonder what or who is making junk. I would hate to tell
you what it cost to have them repaired. alma nh----- Original Message -----

I've bought some pretty decent aftermarket cord assemblies lately. This
would be the quickest, easiest fix. I suppose you could always replace
the female plug with an original, if you wanted it to look more like it
was.

Subject: walking foot
I am finally going to take a beginning quilt class and will be using either
my black or white featherweight. Could someone please tell me a good source
for a walking foot and a 1/4 inch foot? Do I need different feet for each
featherweight? Thanks for the info. Lynndea1@aol.com

Mary Lehrhoff,=20
how profound, your message about your priorities..I try to live my life
one day at a time, and think I only get one chance at it, so If I want
to sew all day I do...but if I want to chase away with my sister on an
expensive day excursion I do...cause like you said you only live once!
It does get you in trouble from time to time, but so worth it.=20
I spent the day yesterday sewing away on my featherweight, and since it
hadn't been oiled and cleaned in a while, spent another hour cleaning
and getting it humming, and today was spent in front of old romantic
movies, as I appliqued the day away...but it was bliss.
Life is short!

I have no idea what "urgent housekeeping chores" means, either. When I
FW calls me to sew, I obey it. After all, it's older than me!

Subject: Fwd: "NEW" Singer bobbins
Hi Feathers~ Today I did my FW maintenance class and ran across something
frightful. I am wondering if any of you have seen the NEW Singer bobbins made
for the 221 and 301. When I do my class at a quilt shop, I ask the shop owner
to provide for sale oil, lubricant, and the Nancy Srebro-Johnson FW book for
the students. I also suggest that she/he might also stock needles, bulbs,
bobbins, and lint brushes. I bring belts, bed cushions and a few other FW things.
Anyhow today one of my students, who also happens to work at the quilt shop
and is a new FW owner, asked me why she couldn't get the bobbin out of her
case. It was stuck fast and I was afraid she had filled her bobbin too much so it
had bound up inside. It took all my strength and a dental tool to remove the
bobbin from her case. The bobbin looked different to me and she showed me
the new package that she had just purchased from the shop owner. There were
four in the package and looking at them side ways I could easily see that one was
skinnier than the others, way skinnier! Then I made the mistake of trying
her tight bobbin in my bobbin case and I am sad to say that it is still there
and I am not sure how to remove it without causing damage to my case.
Anyhow.....the NEW packages were labeled "Singer Platinum" and were designated for 221s
and 301s. I had an older package, just a few years old, and the difference
was #1 they fit the bobbin case properly and #2 they were made in Tiawan and
the bad bobbins were made in China. I discovered that other students had also
purchased packages of the bad bobbins that day. I have a very good
relationship with the shop owner as I have taught for her for 10 years or so. She took
back all the packages and refunded the student's money, no questions asked.
She used to be a Bernina dealer so is aware of the value of good of machine
parts. I asked her to return the bobbins to her notions dealer as faulty. I also
told her I would see what all of you had to say about this to help her find
the right bobbins for her to stock. Any suggestions? Linda Cover in
Modesto, CA .........trying to figure how to get my case free of this nasty
poorly made bobbin! HELP!

We have these sales here in Canada all the time, but they usually go by
newspaper ads. They'll say something about the fact that they have all
these leftover machines because they ordered too many or whatever. Then
you can get a really good deal on this machine if you bring in the coupon.
Apparently, it brings a lot of people in to see the machine which is
usually a really basic model and the dealer upsells a better, more
expensive machine that has more options. Seems to be a very successful
sales pitch as I see the ads quite often in our local papers.

Thank you Vergie for sharing the Mary Brooks Pickins quote. I have
shared it with my friends and have the feeling (laugh out loud) they do
not follow her suggestions for preparing to sew.=20
