> SINGER, HEAVY DUTY SCHOOL MODEL, Sew & Serge Sewing Machine-- $199

Hi Peggy,

This is also advertised in my part of Florida. In my opinion, these are
poorly made and the sales method offers no protection to the buyer.
This machine will not serge, merely make a faux overlock stitch. When
the seller is in our area and people inquire what to do if they have
problems
with the machine, seller has told them to take the machine to our local
sewing
machine repair shop, neglecting to tell them that shop is not affiliated
and will charge them for repair, instruction, etc; I think they also
claim
it's a metal geared machine, but I'd be taking a screwdriver to that claim.

Anyway, potential buyers would do much better to take their money
and put it in a vintage Singer 401, 500 or 503. Glenn Williams sometimes
has these classic models for sale. GWillie37@aol.com

I cannot set down and do things for myself like sewing, crafts, etc if my
house is not in order. Always been that way. Didn't know it was the rul
es!!!!
I have been sewing for about 64 years. First on my Mothers Singer
Treadle then in 1949 on my new Feather Weight that my DH give me.

I wasn't the one who ask but I too would like to know the pattern for mak
ing
quilts for Nursing Homes.

I sure enjoy reading all the posts every night before bed.

Wishing everyone a great Happy, Healthy, New Year, God Bless, Wanda

Hi! I got a Featherweight 221 born Dec 9, 1948 for Christmas from my
daughter! Your list has been fun for me to read. I have to tell you
that the happiest day of my life as a quilter was when my daughter who
was taking a beginning quilting class ( I wanted her to learn from
someone besides just me ) asked me for help on a quilt block. When I
arrived at her house there was a towel on the floor to iron on, her mat
was on the floor to cut on, the dining table was covered with fabric and
blocks and the dishes were overflowing in the sink. I walked in, looked
around, and with pride said "YOU ARE ONE OF US!!" That was one of my
best days.

The 'general purpose' foot from a Singer 500 makes a perfect 1/4" seam
for me. I don't have the part #.

Subject: Truckload Sale

Hello All
Peggy H. in Florida asked about the Truckload sale being advertised. I
have conducted these sales in the past. I, however, did it very
different from the ways I have seen it done since then. I would never
hold one in a town where there was a Singer store. I would hold them
where Singer was not being represented at all. I would not sell a
machine if I considered it, at the time, to be anything I would not
allow my wife to use at home. Keep it in mind she is the last woman on
earth that I want to have problem with her machine. I would of course
have several models to offer, some having more net profit than others,
but I would always gladly sell my advertised model. It had the same
warranty and quality as others, it didnt do as many stitches and have as
many features..
I will say this for what it is worth. The "cut and serge" attachment is
something that I will never stock or promote. It tests my religion every
time I try to use one. I advise anyone that ask me about it to test it
for yourself on fabric that you will use before buying it. It may make
you use words that you though you had forgotten
I also advise anyone that is near a Singer store that can give you
service and instructions should you buy a machine, to check and see if
you can buy the machine there for near the same price. I believe, after
experiencing the problems encountered and avoided, by having support and
not having the support of a local dealer, that it would be worth paying
a little extra for that support.
Hope this helps

Subject: Baby needs paint

I saved my money and purchased my FW in 1947 when I was 11 years
old--we grew up together! She works beautifully (at present I have a
quilt in progress made of 2" blocks) but she needs paint and possibly
some attention that I do not even know about. I thought about this
several years ago and was afraid to trust anyone with my treasure.
Recently I have seen more deterioration on the surface of my little
machine. She is precious to me and I want to give her the care that she
so richly deserves before repair becomes impossible. Would someone
recommend a reputable person to refurbish "My Baby"?

Subject: housekeeping vs sewing

I am rather "casual" in my approach to housekeeping. 5 kids, 23 grandkid
s, working full time, lots of community work, etc, etc, all of you know
the drill; help to maintain the "relaxed look." So, I have found it necessary
to "reward" my self, much like we do the kids, or the pets, for a
"job well done." My house must be company ready, sewing room spotless, laundry
up to date, etc PRIOR to beginning the latest project. I can sew, as
long as everything is maintained in that order. When I fall behind, then
the sewing stops. The only time I can disobey those self imposed rules
is when doing custom sewing for the public, which usually is prom dresses
or wedding gowns, they take priority..............So, I guess this 200
4 Grandma, is kinda like the 1949 author we are discussing........Right now,
I am on a roll. House spotless, extra baking done, and I really am
going to get the 2003 Christmas presents finished this month!!!!!!!Betty

Re: Kenmore machine instructions

If you would send a photo of the front of the machine, I'll tell you the
settings for using the cams. There is some chance of finding the correct
book, but it's a slim chance.

This business has been around a long time. Singer does still make
machines that are destined for the schools that still teach sewing, but
they also have dealers who market them in bulk like this. Nothing wrong
with the machines; they are new in the box from Singer but for warranty
they have to be shipped somewhere. A few of the dealers who merchandise
this way use some bait and switch type tactics. I thought they were all
sort of shady but then my OSMG explained it to me........ he provides
warranty work for a large supplier of these machines.

There is a site dedicated to Kenmores and their usage on Yahoo at

Ann, I am with you on this one. Mama (in NC) says "no one ever
remembers anybody for their dusting..." I have enjoyed all of the
quotes this morning and will print them out for DH who will LOVE the
motercyle sewer quote!

When you sew, be true to the cause, be cool. Be orderly. Have on a clean
t-
shirt,

OK, I'm off- dishes are in the sink and there is sewing to do! Christy

I just had my featherweight in for it's yearly (sort of) checkup. One of the
things the technician did was to "adjust BW Release". Probably a stupid
question, but what is the BW release?
