Subject: Help!!!!! I found a spectacular beauty today and need info!
Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2004 15:11:24 -0800

Today I bought a FW at the Salvation Army. I knew that it was encased
in a solid mahogany table but had NO idea that the 'pedal' was up inside
and is operated by a knee lever. I am blown away at the condition and
the mere fact that everything is working...including the light! I
really don't think it was ever used. There are no evident 'rub' marks
going to the presser foot. I know that it is from 1950, being that the
serial number begins with AJ. The front plate has ribbed lines as
opposed to the scroll-work, I saw on my mothers machine. Is there any
additional information you can give me so I can put it in my e-bay add?
I am not sure of the model. Did they only produce 221's? What did they
call the knee lever? The only marking on the mahogany table is stamped
into the wood...T308409 and on the hardware 'Simanco'. Am I to assume
that Simanco made the table as well? How common were they and are they
now?
Thanks in advance.
Franchesca

The table is not solid mahogany.
Sorry.

but if you're on the border of another state that might work for you just
let me know and i'll forward what i have for there. i omit their specific
personal info whenever i give it out, but do leave the date it was posted
in case there might have been a change.

Nancy, I just took my old, poor tired FW and turned her over to Debbie Bein
in Peekskill and she worked a miracle on her. She is now purring like a
kitten. I recommend her "HIGHLY". She really knows her stuff and she
will take of it and fix her as though she were her own. You can contact her

>Where on earth did this "celery" term come from? >color and that was "pale
turquoise" according to Singer's paint >specification sheets..
i have no idea where it came from but have seen it used frequently here to
describe the "pale turquoise" machines. by looking at my machines, i would
never use pale turquoise to describe the color of it tho. it is white,
unless of course you put it next to pure white which then makes it look a
bit green. in my experience with color, i think white/celery lets people
i'm writing to know that i am aware that there is a difference in color
even between machines. when talking to others about FWs, i use "black" or
"white" to describe. there are several idiosyncracies that sometimes need
defining so i used the white/celery term here, especially in light of the
fact that we were talking about the color of the cases. i did cut and past
the singer paint sheet info into my notes, thanx!
also, thank you for the info about the three types of repro bobbin cases.
i am considering buying from a FWF who offers a return, so will go ahead
with my purchase.

ps i hope that my wording doesn't come across as offensive or defensive.
i've noted that sometimes it's taken wrong when in text because there is no
intonation to let the reader know there is no anger associated with it.

following a pet theory. I had a Q in todays FWF about this. Sharon

I am sorry, I should have told people that didn't know---GoJo is a hand
cleaner. You can buy it at auto parts stores, such as National, Napa
and many others plus some bigger hardware stores that carry auto parts.
In regard to removing adhesive, Pat wrote and told me that paint
thinner or lighter fluid would be easy on the finish then Goof Off.

Hi, Sharon,

I don't know if Singer made a table for the celery, or the tan FW, both
of which have shorter flip up beds. It will be interesting to find out
if Singer did, in fact, make a table for these models. Graham or Alex
should be able to tell us.
My husband has made reproduction tables to fit them, as well as the
extension tables, which will fit the original 'card table', and his
reproduction tables. He also builds reproduction cabinets, and has
modified the opening to fit the 222, the celery and the tan, and even a 301.
You got an excellent deal on the table for $25. We found one for that
price awhile back, too. He replaced the veneer, so that fabric wouldn't
snag on it.

Definite date for this year's roundup will be coming shortly. It will
be a Saturday in June as always, just not sure which one right now.

For all my fellow Texicans who have joined this list since last June,
this is a get together in College Station each year, for vintage sewing
machine nuts. We have a great day of show and tell (or maybe it's drag
and brag), buying, selling, trading, eating and great fellowship.
Especially eating!

Watch for more info and write me off list texaspineywoods@flash.net to
be put on the email info list, or for more details.

For Diane in Texas:

My degree was not in Texas History (or even US history for that matter) but I
think I caught two things in your posting that may be the result of "Texas
History" and do not seem correct. Texas was had it's independence, but was not
the only state to do so. Hawaii is the only state with a "Throne Room" (Not
that kind) and a king to occupy it. Second problem, I think I was taught that
Oklahoma, Kansas and probably Wyoming were acquired through the Louisiana
Purchase, not the Mexican War. I have to admit that when I got my degree in Asian
History, we did not discuss the Alamo very often.

Question from a male fanatic for all of you who understand the female
reasoning better than I. Since my wife does not sew, what should my reply be to the
question of "Why would you want another of those little sewing machines?"

Side note: my spell-checker does not recognize "Alamo".

Subject: Cases for White Fws

Hi All,

I bought two white FWs when I was living in France. One has the dark blue top
and grayish bottom, checked paper interior. The other had dark gray top and
light gray bottom. Neither have locks and both are pretty flimsy compared to
the black cases. Perhaps this style of case was more prevalent in Europe?

The term was coined by Nancy Johnson-Srebro in _Featherweight 221:
The Perfect Portable_. In Chapter 5, she says,

I've had a suggestion that we Featherweight owners band together
to re-name the lightest green colour - 'barely celery.' That's
what it is! This would avoid a lot of confusion and wasted
efforts by collectors searching for the rumoured green (and I
mean /green/) 221 machines that just don't exist!

I am going to purchase one of the following three FW's:

1950- Has key to case and manual.

1952- Has original accessories and manual.

1939- Has scroll face and chrome wheel.

I am a seasoned quilter, and want to have a wonderful FW machine to take to
classes, sew on, and show off (!). I own an older Hus #1+ that I love, but
no longer want to drag in out of the house and risk damage to it.

I would very much appreciate the members writing to me, and advising me what
machine they would choose, and why.

The dealer is highly respected. All machines are in excellent condition- no
original cases.

I have yet to sew on them, and obviously this will be a major deciding
factor.

I am a newbie to the FW list, and appreciate the opportunity to post. Thank
you in advance for taking the time to give me your opinions. Please feel
free to email me privately.

Thanks so much,

To Sharon re white/green cases

All the few hundred models that have passed through my hands have
had either EV or FA numbers -- probably an equal number of each.
Pretty near all have had the same type of green or blue dual or
mono-color case.

The only stitched top cases I've had have come from US service wives
here upgrading to 222 Freearms so it could be that the stitched case
was a North American option only.

Hi, all - I'm in need of 3 screws - the ones that hold the plate down
under the buttonholer. I have purchased three buttonholers over e-bay
and all three were missing that screw, so they just let me keep the
buttonholers. Glenn??? anyone?=20

Well, I think mother nature has had her fun and is thinking about spring

until July 4th for them to disappear!
