Subject: Dates for FW changes????

I think I'm seeing some FW 221s that have features that don't seem to match
the serial number.
Can someone give me the approximate dates or serial number range where the
following changes were made:
(I know they cannot be tied down exactly - but how about a ballpark figure?)

1. Bobbin Winder Tension asm. moved from side to top?
2. Stitch length gauge from chrome to black background?
3. Faceplate from scroll to striated?
4. Hand wheel from chrome edged to painted black?
5. Feeddog plate from plain to calibrated?
6. Decals from old style to new style?
7. Any other changes I've missed? (Other than Blackface)

Roberta,
One of my FW cases has the metal clip things - they support the
detachable pedal foot, which sort of slides into the clips. See if
yours are spaced sufficiently to accomodate this. Congrats on your new
baby! ~GAquiltR~

Just let the beginner sew away. My 5 year old grand girl sews on my FW
with no trouble at all. I use a little 1/4" plastic foot and on my
newer machine I use a 1/4" foot with a little vertical fence thing.
This helps the seams to be accurate. =20

Actually, you hardly ever hear of anyone sewing their fingers into their
machine.

Hi,

I am a Featherweight owner and love it, although I have a Nelco Sewing
Machine which I
have had since about 1960. It has the built in zig zags, makes
buttonholes and anything
else I need and has a knee control, which I like very much. It has been
serviced and taken=20
care of regularly. I am having trouble keeping my stitch regulated. I
adjust the tension, I try=20
not to adjust the bobbin too much, but I do use the test of holding the
bobbin up by the=20
thread, the common test. I still can't keep a nice stitch, I have even
taken it to a guy who=20
works on machines regularly and he gets it adjusted so that it has a
nice stitch. I do a little
sewing on it and walla, it is back to a very uneven stitch. Any
suggestions?

You would think after all these years, I could at least keep my stitch
even, thanks for any
suggestions. =20

About a year ago, people wrote in describing their sewing/craft rooms. One lady
described her room and mentioned that they had built and installed a Murphy bed
in her sewing room. I don't remember her name, but would be ever so grateful if
she could please contact me. I have lost the website she sent with the info on
the kit.

Thanks,
Becky in Arkansas, still sewing on my sweet little British Featherweight!

Needle Guard
I do have, as others do, a finger or needle guard for the 221 that
fastens to the presser foot clamp.

221 Carry Case
The two springy metal fingers on the left side were to hold and oval oil
can.

Bobbin Case Falling Out
Under normal circumstances, the bobbin case should not just fall out on
its own. The simplest solution would be to see whether or not the BC is
an OEM Singer. Despite improvements, I have not found the replacement
bobbin cases to be very useful.

Thanks to all those who have visited our eBay store "Vintage Sewing
Machines and Parts". We have now added genuine parts for Touch & Sew,
Athena, Futura, Slantomatic, and Stylist, as well as 221 parts. We are
going south (out of the ice) for a few days, so we will not be shipping,
but I will be checking e-mail and answering questions every day.
Can anyone suggest some great antiques places between here and Tampa?

The shelf of the roght is simply to provide space underneath for the
wheel and bobbin winder. The two clips on the left are for the
screwdrivers.

Not so, the lever is simply for releasing the case from the bobbin
assembly. Bobbins are not locked in

Hi Carol and all -
I know only two things about Amsterdam, both of which might be interesting to you:
1. It has a VERY high crime rate in certain areas of the city; find out which
areas, before you go!
2. It's the world capitol for buying diamonds. :-D
