Subject: 301 Foot controllers
Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 15:20:39 -0500

Many thanks to all who offered suggestions for solving my foot
controller problems. I got the courage to go inside and take a look at
the workings. One is decidedly broken with a big crack, one had a loose
connection making the light blink and that problem is now solved. The
third one operates nicely by coaxing the belt wheel gently when the
needle is left in the up position and I don't mind doing that once in a
while to get a good stitch on a nice 301. I can use that one as a spare
and be content that the problem is no more serious than that. =20

You all have been so helpful. I am grateful.

Laura

Subject: Tables

I am looking for a source for reproduction Featherweight sewing tables.
Do you know a source?  I'd love an original, but can't seem to find one.&
nbsp; Did see a gentleman at at Mn. State Quilt Show who was selling ones he
made.  Unfortunately, I do not have any info to contact him.  Any
source would be appreciated.

Subject: Old Singer 99

I wrote yesterday about the old Singer 99 from 1925. I got a few responses which
made me think that I didn't make it clear that I DO have the power cord. But
with the cord I have I did not have any power to the machine unless I didn't have
the knee bar on right to make it run and the bulb was burned out.
It's just going to take someone with more knowledge than I have to figure out
what the problem is.

Subject: repairs
Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 11:09:31 -0500

After seeing so many posts here and there about problems with repair
shops, I thought I would offer a little perspective from the point of
view of a repairman and shop owner. There may be times when it is wise
to take your machine in rather than trying to repair it your self.

1. Most repair shops I know are honest, and really want to please their
customers. Beware of the ones who advertise repair of any machine for
$4.95 (or some such figure). It just simply can't be done. I've never
known anyone to escape from one of these shops for less than $100.00.
2. CLEARLY describe the symptoms your machine is showing i.e. breaking
thread, needle hitting, etc. Leave your thread and a fabric sample with
the machine. Don't decide in advance what is wrong. Be sure the symptoms
you give are written on the work order. Leave a good phone number.
3. Don't demand the machine be repaired while you wait. Nothing drives a
repairman as crazy as this.
4. Don't expect a miracle for $15.00. When we had a shop, we found that
we had to average $65.00 per machine to profitably keep the doors open.
5. DO sew on the machine before you leave with it. All legitimate shops
welcome this, as they can be sure your expectations are met and your
problem is solved.

I need help locating a timing belt for the white Featherweight. I have
called on all the sources I know, but keep getting the same answer: "Not
available anymore". This group is so knowledgeable and helpful, I
thought I might try here. If anyone has a belt or knows where I can get
one, please e-mail me.
Thank you in advance.

Subject: Sewing speed and Jamboree details
From: Ann Marie Weer

Dear FWF

I'd love to hear more details about the FWF Jamboree in Salisbury MD - I'm
within easy driving distance and would like to meet others who appreciate
these fine old Singers.

Recently there has been some discussion about sewing speed of 201's
-1200-1400spm. Are the gear driven 15-91's in the same speed range? How
fast does Featherweight go?

Thanks so much to all who post and further my education in this wonderful
hobby.
