Dear Feathers:
I have received a missive today informing me that the Gov't SM Warehouse
is no more: Olfrank in Southern Ohio has informed me that: "You are
too late! I don't know what your map shows,but the warehouse was an
underground vault in Secaucas and is now covered up by the stadium.
I got them all just ahead of the bulldozers and covered them with
paisley contact paper .What a job scraping that crinkle finish off."
As I was raised to be a lady, I don't want Frank to think I'm doubting
his word, but a few Horse Feathers fell offa his email when I read it,
and I sneezed profusely. The poor man..I can just see him with
thousands of (what he THINKS are FW's) all covered with...ugh....paisley
contact paper...can you imagine how ugly THAT is???
However, the Road to Oz is still the only True and Authentic Godzilla FW
Secret Treasure Trove. I didn't want to make him feel sad, looking at
all those Paisley Contacted SM's (I wonder what they REALLLY are????)
so, I politely didn't say anything to him....if there is a Missus
OlFrank, I would advise her to be very sweet to him, as this news is
probably devasting to the poor man. Being from Ohio myself (Canton) I
can understand how he got confused. Especially in Secaucus where anyone
can and usually is confused....all that swampy stuff...yuk...
I'm really in the mood to go out this weekend and find a True
Treasure...I'm open as to what it is, as long as it's SM, preferably FW,
related. I have a Yen to find myself the FW cabinet, and I wont' be
happy until I do...am I doomed to live out my life in misery? I hope
not...so wish me luck.

I'm still in shock over this discussion, for I, too, have paint flaked
off the base edge of my FW; it had been in the case on a basement floor
for heaven knows how long. There's just a small amount of bare metal
showing, but -- good grief! -- that's going to spread and spread and
spread? (This is sort of the Ebola virus of sewing machines.) My sole
comfort in all of this is that I paid $30 for the machine at an estate
sale.
Any observations on Gail's suggestion? Aluminum corrosion is probably
chemically different from rust, but oxidation is oxidation. Might there
be a chance? (Please, God, let there be a chance. . .)

Subject: Davis Verticle Feed
Hi guys,
I was out & about all day after Bernina club & spotted a couple of
interesting machines. One was a Davis Verticle Feed--coffin top, some
strange looking hardware in the drawer (attachments?) & a tattered manual.
The cabinet definitly needed some TLC & there was a big patch of veneer
missing on the top & the wood had an open crack in the spot too.
Now I don't know anything about the Davis, but there was a note on the tag
that said "parts interchangable with Singer, Authority B____ Sewing
Center"!!! What do you all think about that?? I am highly skeptical. DH
said maybe they mean that you can use a Singer needle?
The price was $85 & it's still calling me, but we need another treadle like a
hole in the head.
There was also a 15-97 (according to the manual) in a cabinet with the flip
over side extension & the separate motor & the flying seagull design. Is
this the one that can be converted to a treadle? I thought that was a
different model. That was $105. AD851485
The other one was a coffin top New Home with plate tension & accessories.
The cabinet needed TLC, but it was not as bad as the Davis. Also all the
bright parts were nice & bright. That was $85.
The other one I saw was a 15-91 AL992136 in a bentwood case with attachments
for $65.
All I brought home with me (so far) is a funky electric marcelle curling iron
with the original tag on it & it works! At least it heats up & the wiring
looks to be in good condition. Now if I could only figure out how you're
supposed to use it to make waves.

I believe that Simanco foot 121441 is called a quilting foot. I have found
it great for piecing because it is 1/4 inch from the needle to the edge of
the foot, I use it a lot, almost always on my FW but it also fits on my Elna
Lotus.

Your solid foot with a small hole sounds like a shirring foot. If you tighten the tension and then try to sew with it and the fabric gathers up, that's what you have.

Subject: Cleaning up a 15-90
Hello there! First of all I would like to thank everyone that responded to
my first query. This forum, by far, is the best and and most friendly
source of information I have been able to find on the net. Here is my new
problem....I decided to purchase the model 15-90(?) (I believe I read that
the belt driven models were the 90s) for my wife. It is in pretty good
shape overall, but there are some areas that have some build up on them.
After all the reading I have done, I am still not certain what is the best
cleaner to use. Advice I have found so far....(1) Soapy water on
everything, (2) Simple Green on the body, (3) W-40 on everything, except
the stainless steel, and (4) Alcohol on all parts. Please advise and I
will definitely take the advice of those that respond from this forum.

I don't know if this is new information for all but it was an eye-opener for me. Today I was at the Salvation Army and the guys that drive the truck came in with some furniture. I asked if they had any sm's and they said they had one and went to see if they could get to it in the truck. Unfortunately it was buried and the model they described is basically an one ton model 15 clone that was popular post WW2 from Japan. I asked if they get any older machines, Singers etc. And they told me this--Yes they have some machines at the warehouse. No, the machines don't always go to the thrift stores because they do not sell. Yes, they actually turn down treadles and older (vintage) Singers and have had to send many machines to scrap metal places as they could not sell. Yes, they are usually at the warehouse after 2:30 and I can go down there and they will show me the machines they have. I gave him my name and number and told him that if anyone has a treadle that he won't take (they won't take anything not intact and working too.)--Even if it has parts missing or the drawers are apart etc.. to have the charitable souls give me a call. Guess where I will be tomorrow after work By the way, my Singer guy is looking for a fiddle base machine with mother of pearl inlay. If anyone is looking to sell one, email me.

Subject: Needles
Hi,
Has anyone tried any free motion embroidery on their old Singers? I'm
wondering about what needles you use. There doesn't seem to be any
specialized needles for the Singers made for handling the fancy threads &
metallics.
