Subject: Another find! A 15-91

Greetings, all!

Now Singers seem to be crawling out of the woodwork for me! I found a
15-91 which needs to be cleaned up, possibly a 7 - 8 condition, in a 10
condition desk with 2 drawers on each side. I thought at first that the
desk had been refinished, but now I don't think so because the interior
of the drawers is pristine. The machine has the bobbin case. And in
the drawers.....the green buttonholer, the original manual (4/51)in
like-new condition, a zig-zag attachment in a like-new box, the Singer
lubricant in its slightly worn box, the feet for the 15-91 in the green
box (like new), extra bobbins and needles (in a Singer green sleeve).
And the price? $85. US. I am really running out of space, but that
doggone desk is calling me. Would a 319 fit in that desk?

And at the same time, I know that that machine was probably part of an
estate sale (the manual has the first owner's name written on the front
inner page in pencil), and it probably needs to be cleaned up (the
machine that is--the cabinet is in fantastic condition) and oiled and
lubricated. Am I crazy to even think about this? My husband will find
it hard to understand a wife who has suddenly acquired not 2 but 3
additional sewing machines. But that cabinet!!! And if I wanted to I
could actually sell the sewing machine (probably not). And if I don't,
I can see our house becoming the official rest home for vintage sewing
machines!
That doggone sewing desk is calling me, and the machine itself is
beginning to whisper. Help!

Hi Guys

Just a note to ask that you hold fire on any queries whilst I am away on
vacation.

I leave on Saturday and will not be back until November 1 -- sort of a
working trip-cum-vacation around the US.

I shall be able to get to e-mail but, of course, I will not have access to
the archives. Anything really urgent, e-mail me but I'd appreciate your
holding on to regular queries until I return.

I shall not be able to process any Featherweight orders but will have a
fresh batch of machines at http://www.sew-sales.com on my return.

Thanks

Subject: Need help to identify old machine

I have been given a very old Singer machine, serial # G1735829.
The bobbin is long and skinny with a point at each end, no hole.
A person at my work brought it and asked if I wanted it. She said it was in
her attic for several years. I'm sure it needs a good cleaning and oiling.
Should I take it to my local repairman or should I try to do it myself?

Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 08:09:11 PDT

Unfortunate circumstances have forced me to un-lurk...

I had loaned out my beloved 301 to a friend, and got it back fuzzy, dirty
and making a funny noise. Not too strange, really; nobody takes care of our
machines as well as we do.

So, in preparation of quilting last night, I tried to
get whatever it was out from behind the guide that holds the bobbin in the
race assembly. I took out the small screw in the race, and attempted to
slide out the thin crescent piece to remove the inset that holds the bobbin
in place. It was stuck; I coaxed and coaxed and finally snapped it off at
the screw hole. Stupid me. Great finish to a great day. Now, if I'm
not mistaken, I need to replace the entire race assembly.

Anyway....is anyone out there parting out a 301??? Hopeful thanks in
advance...

Richard

Subject: That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Hi:

Can't tell you all how much I am enjoying this new site (to me). I have
heard such neat stories and found so much help on this site that I wanted to
share mine.

I have been sewing all my life and tried quilting once, but didn't much like
it. Have tried lots of other things that I enjoyed more. Moved to FL and
tried quilting a pillow print - fell in love! Hand quilted 15 pillows for
Christmas that year. Just recently joined a class on quilting and I am
hooked! My friend in MI is an avid quilter and had told me about a FW 15
years ago. Since then I have watched every Sat while garage saleing and have
never seen one. Almost bought one from a dealer a few years ago, but passed.

Realized I needed a small machine to take to quilting class and remembered
the FW. Started really looking in earnest. Asked at every garage sale and
saw a lot of old machines that I passed up. Went to a condo sale a few weeks
ago. I never take more than $20 cash with me, but that day for some reason I
put $20 in one pocket and $40 in another. The sale had lots of crewel
embroidery stuff and lots of kids stuff. Husband tired quickly and went to
the car. I talked to a woman standing by Barbie Dolls and asked if there was
a sewing machine. She said to ask Monique as it was her sale (her mother had
passed away and she was getting rid of her stuff). Walked back up toward the
Condo and Monique was talking to a gentleman. I turned to go, then turned
again and asked it "do you have a sewing machine?" Monique said "I think
there is one in the storage room, let me look." I nearly had a heart attack
when she came out carrying the black box, I could hardly keep my composure
(but years of garage saleing have helped). She opened it and there it was,
in perfect condition. I explained that I had just started taking quilt
classes and needed something small to carry back and forth. I asked how much
and she stopped to think. In the meantime, her friend came back up and said
"what a cute machine, maybe I should buy it." I managed to stay quiet. Then
a man came up and asked the price of something. Finally, Monique looked at
me and said, "How about $40?" I very calmly said "I think I'll treat myself
and buy it - it's just the right size for quilting class." You never saw $40
come out of someone's pocket so fast and I think I must have run down the
driveway. I got in the car with the box on my lap and said to my husband
"drive!!!" before she changes her mind! He thought I was crazy but knew I
had something good. Machine came in beautiful shape with all attachments and
a box in perfect shape. I will enjoy many hours quilting on it.

The next weekend we were at the flea market and guess what? In some guy's
junk we found another FW. This one is older than mine but in excellent shape
also. Paid more, but plan to sell it later. We are now on the prowl!

This site has been a godsend! Thanks everyone.

Linda (in sunny Florida where there surely must be more FW's)!

Have you ever heard of a Fukusuki Machine? My mom has one and it looks like a Singer Feather weight but is a lot heavier. She is curious about it and asked that I see if I could find out about it.

Subject: Qyuilting with a Pfaff

Hello, Responding to Chris's question about machine quilting - I also
have a Pfaff 1222E and it quilts beautifully The dual feed (walking
foot) does a great job and the stopmatic needle control is helpful when
pivoting the quilt. The biggest problem is handling the bulk of a queen
size quilt under the head of the machine. But this is true of any
machine. Free motion quilting is easier to do, but sometimes straight
line quilting is necessary. The Pfaff is a wonderful machine, but I find
the old lock stitch Singers best for piecing, particularly the 201 or
301 slant needle. Those stitches are straight and tight!. Hope this is
helpful.
Love reading the mail every day!. I have learned so many helpful hints
about machines and what to do with them. I have a nice collection of
about a dozen wonderful Singers. Haven't got room for any more, unless
one should attach itself to me and and I can't get unglued!.

I came home from the Goodwill with an Elna Lotus. I'd like to get a
copy of a manual, does anyone out there happen to have one I could get a
photocopy of?

Subject: Gayle's "Big Thank you" to Glenn

Hi all! Regarding Gayle's "Big Thank you" to Glenn who had such beneficial
information on removing the odor from a carrying case -- share, please?
Was it the newspapers? I've tried that, but maybe I didn't leave it long
enough (it's still in there, though).

This case belongs to a wonderful machine (chrome wheel, bobbin on the front
of the bed, perfect stitch), and the case is in pretty good shape. EXCEPT
FOR THAT SMELL!

I will be eternally grateful if Glenn or Gayle could let us know what to do
right.

By the way, I bought a lovely AL sight unseen from Idaho recently. When it
came I plugged it in and the motor tried hard, but the machine seemed
seized up. I called the repairmen (bless all of you who make house calls)
and he took it apart at my kitchen table. Under the feed dogs were two
copperish strips, screwed firmly in place. He said he had never seen them
before, but thought they might have been part of the shipping regime. If
so, the shop/dealer the machine was delivered to forgot to remove them. I
had a dreadful imagine of a woman in a remote part of Idaho never being
able to use her machine. The disappointment!

Well, I guess that's enough from me,

Bye for now Feathers!

Pat Day (having a perfect fall here in Utah - blessings to all enduring bad
weather)

Subject: treadle

Hi Y'all,
I need some advice. I have two treadle machines, a W&W No.9 and a Singer
model #66 (Red Eye) , both in original oak cabinets, and I only have room for
one. I would like to sell or trade either machine..is there a website, other
than an auction, that I can post to?

Subject: FINDS

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I wrote, but still checking my
mail when we stop for a while. Have been in Wyoming for the last 2 months
and really miss staying on top of the digests on a daily basis. I can
usually save to the hard drive and catch up later. Have not been buying
sewing machines as space is limited now to really small things. Have seen
some FW and others, but some are really pricey. Always looking for my
Corticelli spools of thread and finding some as well and some Hall's china
that I like. We found what I think Linda Heminway refers to as a
Paris? table in a Cheyenne flea market. It has the measurement on the
edge, about 19 1/2 in. wide, 36 3/4 in. long, and 26 1/2 in. high. It has
wooden wheels, the patent date is 8/14/1888, has Belding-Hall Mfg. Co.
Prize Medal, Belding, Mich., USA. Have not been able to research it, but
it would be nice if it related to Belding Thread Co.(one can hope). It
folds up very flat, so takes up little space while we travel.

Glad to read about everyone's finds, keep the faith. They'll show up
where you least expect it, I know.
