Hello All You FW's,
I've been reading the newsletter for about a month now. I heard about the 221 at a needlework gathering in Liberty, MO and stupid me, I thought I could go out and buy one off a store shelf. Imagine how disappointed I was when I found out that they were "hard to find." So, I found an ad in a quilting magazine and called. The man was "willing" to part with one for ONLY $450! I bought it and it came in pretty good shape. I was happy with it, but every now and then I get a little tingle from it when I touch the bed part and am sewing. What's that about?

During this time my Mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I lived at the hospital all summer until she came home to live with us. She was here four days and passed away. We took her to her hometown for burial and that's where my brother lives. We were in his house one night and I mentioned that I needed a table to sew on with my new 221. No one knew what a 221 was and they were unimpressed that I had one. But, my brother said, "I've got Grandma's old table out there in the other room just piled with old paint cans. If you replace it with a cheap card table, you can have it." I tried hard to control myself--I didn't even jump up to go see it. I didn't want to tip my hand--my brother is not known for his generosity. Then, he said, "I've got her old machine, too. I don't want it. It's just in the way. Do you want it? It's a
great big thing." So, he went into the closet and found the case. When he brought it out, I couldn't believe my eyes--it was a 221 in perfect condition. It looks like no one has ever used it! I took the machine with me that night back to the hotel and the next day I had been to Wal-Mart, bought a $20.00 card table, and exchanged it for the 221 table, which had one minor scratch. My Grandma's name was Eva, so just what I call the machine!
So, for anyone who is having trouble finding a FW that you can afford, there do seem to be some undiscovered gems out there. Don't give up

Hi,
I just looked at Capt's web pages of the decals & stands. There's more there
than the last time I looked!
The Queen Ann electric "parlor" cabinet is like the one we have with the 201
in it.

Subject: Copy of 301A book

Hi everyone. I am in need of a copy of the instruction book for the 301-A.
Does anyone have one that is willing to copy it and sell it to me? Also,
what is the difference between the 301 and 301A? I was just given the 301A
by my grandmother who may have used the machine only a dozen times. So it's
in very good condition but for the scratches left on the back of the machine
by the foot-peddle holder in the case. This has been a VERY good year for
me, my 50th. A friend found a 221 for me at a quilt show in 8 condition (
yeah, I paid top price), but now I have my grandmother's 301A. I know how
lucky I am and I did wish for both: the FW and something that belongs to my
grandmother that turned out to be the 301. She is alive and kicking at 92,
but cleaning out the house to make life less complicated. I am definately
doing the happy dance.

A featherweight table is going at an auction tomorrow (Sat.) but I'm not
sure if it's an 'original'. I heard that there were several models made.
Can't find a stamped number but it might have been refinished. The top
isn't veneer, it's very old plywood looking. The insert fits exactly as
well as the old featherweight that's going with it. It has original bracket
to hold machine. The insert also has an underside that I haven't seen, but
then this is only the second I've seen. It has an x that extends from end
to end with a 'bent handle' (for lack of better description) in the middle
that you have to turn slightly to undo the insert. Make sense? The legs
are square wood and both the edge and legs are dark brown, as is the top.
Maybe the top just has the veneer missing??? The hardware on the legs are
what I've seen in pictures of an original. The underside of the insert just
looks like it might have been the first

To All My FIne Feathered Friends:

I have been standing back lately, because due to the higher cost of living,
I had to go back to work full time in real estate. I must say that I was
lacking the confidence to return, since so many things have changed, and I
had lost the eyesight in my left eye, as so many of you know. I mostly
lacked confidence to return to the business rat race. BUT, with the help of
MaryJane and our evening walking friend, Mary Pat, they get the credit for
giving me the motivation and the enthusiasm and support to give it a try.
Well, I started September 1. In my first seven days, I listed a $625,000
home and sold a $518,500 home. The listing is predicted to sell very soon by
the others in my new office. The average sale of a home in La Jolla is
$1,000,000. Some of those homes have featherweights, too. The new office is
located on Wall Street in the heart of La Jolla. I cannot begin to tell you
how young, worthwhile and enjoyable I feel back in the race for wealth. I am
taking it more easy now, though, and not letting things get me down. I still
manage to get up early Saturday mornings and rush out to garage and estate
sales before reporting in to the office.
Still have my antenae up for sewing machines. In fact, when I go to the
garage sales, I am asking if they are planning on selling their homes. It
really pays to have a good wife and a good friend who will encourage you to
get out and live again. I feel so much better, and I had to share this with
my friends.
