Turkey in the Straw

18" Block

Fabric

The Turkey in the Straw block uses four different fabrics.

 Fabric A

 Fabric B

 Fabric C

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This block requires:

 five 6-1/2" squares of Fabric C
 sixteen 3-1/2" squares of background fabric
 four 3-1/2" squares of Fabric A
 four 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of Fabric C
 three 5-3/4" squares of Fabric B
 three 5-3/4" squares of background fabric


 Piecing the block

 1) On the wrong side of one of the 5-3/4" background squares, lightly mark a line 2-7/8" from the edges, dividing the block into four equal sized squares. Then mark a diagonal line through each of the squares as shown. Repeat with the two remaining 5-3/4" background fabric squares.
 2) Place one of the marked 5-3/4" background fabric squares right sides together with one of the 5-3/4" squares of fabric B making sure that the edges are even and the background fabric square is on top. Sew 1/4" away from each of the diagonal lines as shown. Repeat with the two remaining background fabric squares and the 5-3/4" squares of fabric B.

3) Carefully cut the sewn squares apart on the marked lines as shown. Each sewn square unit should yield eight 2-1/2" half square triangles. There should be a total of twenty-four half square triangles after cutting apart the three sewn units. Press the seam allowances toward fabric B.
 4) Take three of the half-square triangles completed in Step 3 and piece together as shown. Repeat with nine more of the half-square triangles for a total of four units. Press seam allowances toward Fabric B. These completed units should measure 2-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 5) Take three of the half-square triangles completed in Step 3 and piece together as shown. Note: This unit is the mirror image of the units completed above in Step 4. Repeat with the remaining half-square triangles for a total of four units. Press seam allowances toward Fabric B. These completed units should measure 2-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 6) Take one of the units completed in Step 4 and one of the uniots completed in Step 5 and piece together with one of the 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of fabric C as shown. Make sure that the Step 4 and Step 5 units are placed correctly. Repeat with the remaining Step 4 and Step 5 units and the fabric C rectangles. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric C rectangles. The completed units should measure 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" square.
 7) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 3-1/2" squares of fabric A as shown.
 8) Take one of the 6-1/2" squares of fabric C and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 9) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric A.
 10) Take the unit completed in Step 9 and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 11) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 12) Take the unit completed in Step 9 and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 13) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B. This completed unit should measure 4-1/2" square.
 14) Take the unit completed in Step 13 and the remaining 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.
 15) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric A. This completed unit should measure 6-1/2".
 16) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the sixteen 3-1/2" squares of background fabric as shown.
 17) Take one of the 6-1/2" squares of fabric C and one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 6-1/2" squares of fabric C. /TD>
 18) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 19) Take the unit completed in Step 18 and one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 18 units and three more of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric.
 20) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 21) Take the unit completed in Step 20 and one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 20 units and three more of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric.
 22) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 23) Take the unit completed in Step 22 and one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 22 units and three remaining of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric.
 24) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. These completed units should measure 6-1/2" square.
 25) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and two of the units completed in Step 24 and piece together as show to form the top row of the Turkey in the straw block. Repeat with one more Step 6 unit and the two remaining Step 24 units to form the bottom row of the block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 24 units. The completed rows should measure 6-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 26) Take the two remaining Step 6 units and the unit completed in Step 15 and piece together as shown to form the middle row of the quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 15 unit. The completed row should measure 6-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 27) Piece the three rows created in Steps 25 and 26 together as shown to complete the Turkey on the Straw block. Press the seam allowances away from the center of the block. The finished block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
