Directions for Storm at Sea Quilt Block

Storm at Sea is a complicated looking block that is actually easy to piece using foundation paper piecing methods. This pattern produces a stunning quilt when blocks are set together without using any sashing.

Help, I don't know how to do foundation paper piecing.

To piece the Storm at Sea block you will need:

 One center foundation

 Four edge foundations

 And four corner foundations

This block uses two design fabrics, Fabric A and Fabric B , and one background fabric, Fabric C .

Piecing Directions

  1. Piece the center foundation using Fabric A for pieces #1, #6, #7, #8, and #9 and Fabric C for pieces #2, #3, #4, and #5 .

  2. Piece the four edge foundations using Fabric B for piece #1 and Fabric C for pieces #2, #3, #4, and #5 .

  3. Piece the four corner foundations using Fabric A for piece #1, Fabric B for pieces #2, #3, #4, and #5, and Fabric C for pieces #6, #7, #8, and #9 .

  4. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, trim the foundation blocks on the outer line. DO NOT remove the foundation paper yet.

  5. Piece two corner blocks to both ends of an edge block. Remove the foundation paper from the seam allowances only. Press the seams to one side. Repeat with the other two corner pieces and one edge piece.

  6. Piece the two remaining edge pieces to the center piece. Remove the foundation paper from the seam allowances only and press the seam allowance to one side.

  7. Piece the three strips formed in steps #5 and #6 to form the finished Storm at Sea block.

  8. Give the block a final pressing and remove the remaining foundation paper.
