Fabric

The Economy block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This block requires:

 Four 2" squares of fabric A
 Four 3-1/2" x 8" rectangles of fabric A
 Sixty-eight 2" squares of fabric B
 sixteen 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric
 seventeen 3-1/2" squares of background fabric


 Piecing the block

 1) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the sixty-eight 2" fabric B squares as shown.
 2) Take one of the marked 2" squares of fabric B and one of the 3-1/2" square of background fabric and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with sixteen more marked fabric B squares and the sixteen remaining 3-1/2" background fabric squares.
 3) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B square.
 4) Take one of the marked 2" squares of fabric B and one of the units from Step 3 and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with sixteen more marked fabric B squares and the sixteen remaining Step 3 units.
 5) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B square.
 6) Take one of the marked 2" squares of fabric B and one of the units from Step 5 and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with sixteen more marked fabric B squares and the sixteen remaining Step 5 units.
 7) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B square.
 8) Take one of the marked 2" squares of fabric B and one of the units from Step 7 and place, right sides together, with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with sixteen remaining marked fabric B squares and the sixteen remaining Step 7 units.
 9) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B square. The completed units should measure 3-1/2".
 10) Take two of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and one of the 2" squares of fabric A and piece together as shown. Repeat with six more 2" x 3-1/2" background fabric rectangles and the three remaining 2" fabric A squares. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles. The completed units should measure 2"x 8".
 11) Take two of the units completed in Step 9 and piece together with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and piece together as shown. repeat with fourteen more fo the Step 9 units and the remaining seven 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of background fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 8".
 12) Take one of the units completed in Step 10 and two of the units completed in Step 11 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the three remaining Step 10 units and the six remaining Step 11 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 10 units. These completed corner squares should measure 8".
 13) Take the last Step 9 unit and two of the 3-1/2" x 8" rectangles of fabric A and piece together as shown to completed the center row of the quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric A rectangles. The completed row should measure 3-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 14) Take two of the squares completed in Step 12 and one of the 3-1/2" x 8" rectangle of fabric A and piece together as shown to create the top row of the quilt block. Repeat with the two remaining Step 12 squares and the remaining 3-1/2" x 8" rectangles of fabric A to form the bottom row of the quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric A rectangles. The completed rows should measure 8" x 18-1/2".
 15) Take the center row completed in Step 13 and the top and bottom row completed in Step 14 and piece together as shown to completed the Economy quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the center row of the block. The completed block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
