The Best of All block uses three different fabrics.

Cutting the fabric

This block requires:

 one 6-1/2" square of background fabric
 one 7-3/4" square of fabric A
 one 7-3/4" square of background fabric
 eight 3-1/2" squares of fabric A
 twenty-four 3-1/2" squares of background fabric
 eight 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of fabric B


 Piecing the block

 1) One the wrong side of the 7-3/4" background fabric square light draw a line 3-7/8" from each of the sides dividing the larger square into four smaller squares. Then lightly draw four diagonal lines dividing each square in half on the diagonal as shown.
 2) Place the marked 7-3/4" background fabric square, right sides together and edges even, with the 7-3/4" square of fabric A. Sew 1/4" away from each sides of the diagonal lines as shown.
3) Carefully cut the sewn squares apart on the marked lines as shown to create eight half-square triangles. Press the seam allowances toward fabric A. The completed half-square triangles units should measure 3-1/2".
4) Take each of the half-square triangles from Step 3 and piece together with one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric square.
5) Take two of the units completed in Step 4 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the six remaining Step 4 units. Press the seam allowances in either direction. These completed square units should measure 6-1/2".
 6) On the wrong side of the remaining sixteen 3-1/2" background fabric squares lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 7) Place one of the 3-1/2" marked background fabric square, right side together with one of the 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles of fabric B with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the seven remaining 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" fabric B rectangles and seven more of the 3-1/2" background fabric squares.
 8) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 9) Take one of the units completed in Step 8 and place one of the marked 3-1/2" background fabric squares, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the seven remaining Step 8 units and the seven remaining marked 3-1/2" background fabric squares.
 10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric squares. The completed "geese" units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2". Put four of the completed units aside, the remaining four units will be used in Step 12.
 11) On the wrong side of the eight 3-1/2" fabric A squares lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 12) Take one of the units completed in Step 10 and place one of the marked 3-1/2" fabric A squares, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with three more of the Step 10 units and three more of the marked 3-1/2" fabric A squares.
 13) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A square.
 14) Take one of the units completed in Step 13 and place one of the marked 3-1/2" fabric A squares, right side together with the diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 13 units and the three remaining marked 3-1/2" fabric A squares.
 15) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A squares. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 16) Take one of the units completed in Step 10 and one of the units completed in Step 15 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 10 and Step 15 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 10 units. The completed squares should measure 6-1/2".
 17) Take the 6-1/2" background fabric square and two of the squares completed in Step 17 and piece together as shown to complete the center row of the quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the center background fabric square. The completed quilt block row should measure 6-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 18) Take one of the units completed in Step 17 and two of the units completed in Step 5 and piece together as shown, being sure that the Step 5 units are placed correctly. This will completed the top row of the quilt block. Repeat with the remaining Step 17 and Step 5 units to complete the bottom row of the block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 5 units. The completed block rows should measure 6-1/2" x 18-1/2".
 19) Take the row completed in Step 17 and the two rows completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown to completed the Best of All quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward to center row of the block. The completed Best of All quilt block should measure 18-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
