One focus fabric
One background fabric
one 3-1/2" square of background fabric
four 3-1/2" x 5" rectangles of focus fabric
sixteen 2" squares of background fabric
one 5-3/8" x 10-3/4" rectangle of focus fabric
one 5-3/8" x 10-3/4" rectangle of background fabric |
1) On the wrong side of the 5-3/8" x 10-3/4" rectangle of background fabric lightly mark a line 5-3/8" from the shorter edge of the rectangle. This line will divide the rectangle into two even sized squares. Then, mark a diagonal line through each of the squares as shown.
2) Take the marked rectangle of background fabric and the 5-3/8" x 10-3/4" of focus fabric and place right sides together with all edges even and the wrong side of the background fabric rectangle on the top. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the diagonal lines as shown.
|
3) Carefully unit the rectangles apart on the marked lines as shown. Press seam allowances toward the focus fabric. The half-square triangles created in this step should measure 5" square. |
4) On the wrong side of the sixteen 2" squares of background fabric lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
5) Take one of the 3-1/2" x 5" rectangles of focus fabric and place one of the 2" marked background fabric squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 3-1/2" x 5" focus fabric rectangles and three more of the marked 2" background fabric squares.
6) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
7) Take one of the units completed in Step 6 and place one of the 2" marked background fabric squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 6 units and three more of the marked 2" background fabric squares.
8) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
9) Take one of the units completed in Step 8 and place one of the 2" marked background fabric squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 8 units and three more of the marked 2" background fabric squares.
10) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
11) Take one of the units completed in Step 10 and place one of the 2" marked background fabric squares, right sides together, on top of the rectangle with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 10 units and the three remaining marked 2" background fabric squares.
12) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. The completed rectangle units should measure 3-1/2" x 5".
13) Take two of the rectangular units completed in Step 12 and piece together with the 3-1/2" square of background fabric as shown to completed the middle row of the Goshen Star quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the background square. The completed row should measure 3-1/2" x 12-1/2".
14) Take two of the half-square triangles completed in Step 3 and piece with one of the units completed in Step 12 as shown. Repeat with the two remaining half-squares and the one remaining Step 12 unit. This completes the top and the bottom row of the quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the half-square triangle units. The completed rows should measure 5" x 12-1/2".
15) Piece the middle row completed in Step 13 together with the top and bottom rows completed in Step 14 as shown to completed the Goshen Star quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the center row of the quilt block. The completed block should measure 12-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. |
