 one 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" rectangle of fabric A
 one 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" rectangle of fabric B
one 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" rectangle of background fabric
 one 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" rectangle of fabric B
one 4-1/2" square of fabric A
two 2-1/2" squares of background fabric
two 2-1/2" squares of fabric B
one 2-1/2" strip of background fabric at least 11" long
one 2-1/2" strip of fabric C at least 11" long

 Piecing the block

 1) Sew the 2-1/2" wide strip of fabric C to the 2-1/2" strip of background fabric using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam toward the darker fabric.
 2) With a rotary cutter, straighten one edge the sewn together strips. Then cut four 2-1/2" wide x 4-1/2" tall rectangles from the sewn strips.
 3) Take two of the rectangles from Step 2 and piece together as shown. Press seam allowance toward the left. Repeat with the remaining Step 2 units. The completed squares should measure 4-1/2".
 4) On the wrong side of the 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" background fabric, lightly mark a line 2-7/8" from one of the shorter sides. This should divide the rectangle into two 2-7/8" squares. Then mark a diagonal line through the center of the squares as shown.
 5) Place the marked rectangle of background fabric, right sides together, with the 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" rectangle of fabric B, making sure that all of the edges are even. Sew 1/4" away from the marked diagonal lines as shown.
 6) With the rotary cutter, carefully cut the sewn rectangles apart on the marked lines as shown. Press the seam allowance toward fabric B. This should yield four 2-1/2" half-square triangles.
 7) Take one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and piece together with one of the half-square triangles completed in Step 6 making sure that the half-square triangle unit is placed as shown. Repeat with the other 2-1/2" square of fabric B and one more of the Step 6 half-square triangles. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric B squares.
 8) Take one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and piece together with one of the half-square triangles completed in Step 6 making sure that the half-square triangle unit is placed as shown. Repeat with the other 2-1/2" square of background fabric and one more of the Step 6 half-square triangles. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric squares.
 9) Take one of the units completed in Step 7 and one of the units completed in Step 8 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the two remaining Step 7 and Step 8 units. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 7 units. The completed unit squares should measure 4-1/2".
 10) On the wrong side of the 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" fabric B, lightly mark a line 4-7/8" from one of the shorter sides. This should divide the rectangle into two 4-7/8" squares. Then mark a diagonal line through the center of the squares as shown.
 11) Place the marked rectangle of fabric B, right sides together, with the 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" rectangle of fabric A, making sure that all of the edges are even. Sew 1/4" away from the marked diagonal lines as shown.

12) With the rotary cutter, carefully cut the sewn rectangles apart on the marked lines as shown. Press the seam allowance toward fabric A. This should yield four 4-1/2" half-square triangles.
 13) Take two of the half-square triangles completed in Step 12 and piece together with the 4-1/2" squares of fabric A to completed the middle row of the Dublin Steps quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the fabric A square. The completed row should measure 4-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 14) Take one fo the Take one of the units completed ins Step 3, one of the half-square triangle units completed in Step 12 and one of the units completed in Step 9 and piece together as shown to completed the top row of the quilt block. Repeat with the remaining units from Steps 3, 9, and 12 to completed the bottom quilt block row. Press the seam allowances away from the Step 12 half-square triangles. The completed rows should measure 4-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 15) Piece together the row completed in Step 13 and the two rows completed in Step 14 as shown to complete the Dublin Steps quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the center row of the block. The completed quilt block should measure 12-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
