 Columbian Puzzle

Fabric

The Columbian Puzzle block uses two different fabrics.

 One focus fabric

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This block requires:

 eight 3-1/2" squares of background fabric
 eight 3-1/2" squares of focus fabric
 eight 2" squares of background fabric
 eight 2" squares of focus fabric


 Piecing the block

 1) On the wrong side of the eight 2" squares of background fabric, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 2) Place one of the marked 2" squares of background fabric, right sides together, with one of the 3-1/2" squares of focus fabric with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the seven remaining 3-1/2" focus fabric squares the seven remaining marked 2" squares of background fabric.
 3) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square. The completed units should measure 3-1/2".
 4) Take two of the units completed in Step 3 and piece together as shown, making sure the background fabric triangles are placed correctly. Repeat with the six remaining Step 3 units. Press the seam allowance to the left. These completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 5) On the wrong side of the eight 2" squares of focus fabric, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 6) Place one of the marked 2" squares of focus fabric, right sides together, with one of the 3-1/2" squares of background fabric with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the seven remaining 3-1/2" background fabric squares the seven remaining marked 2" squares of focus fabric.
 7) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the focus fabric square. The completed units should measure 3-1/2".
 8) Take two of the units completed in Step 7 and piece together as shown, making sure the focus fabric triangles are placed correctly. Repeat with the two more Step 7 units. Press the seam allowance to the right. These completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 9) Take the two units pieced together in Step 8 and piece together as shown to complete the center sections of the quilt block. Press the seam allowance down. This completed unit should measure 6-1/2".
 10) Take the two remaining units from Step 4 and piece together as shown to completed the center row of the Columbian Puzzle quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 4 units. The completed row should measure 6-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 11) Take two of the units completed in Step 7 and one of the units completed in Step 4 and piece together as shown to complete the top row of the quilt block. Repeat with the two remaining Step 7 units and the remaining Step 4 unit to complete the bottom row of the block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 4 unit. These completed rows should measure 3-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 12) Piece together the center row from Step 10 and the top and bottom rows from Step 11 as shown to completed the Columbian Puzzle quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the block. The completed quilt block should measure 12-1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
