 Butterfly

Fabric

The Butterfly block uses four different fabrics.

 Fabric - A

 Fabric - B

 Fabric - C

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This block requires:

 four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric C
 four 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric A
 four 2" squares of background fabric
 four 2" squares of fabric A
 eight 2" squares of fabric B


 Piecing the block

 1) On the wrong side of the eight 2" squares of fabric B, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 2) Place one of the marked 2" squares of fabric B, right sides together, with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric A with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 2" x 3-1/2" fabric A rectangles and three more of the marked 2" squares of fabric B.
 3) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B square.
 4) Take one of the units from Step 3 and place together with one of the remaining 2" fabric B squares, right sides together, with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 3 units and the three remaining 2" fabric B squares.
 5) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric B square. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 6) On the wrong side of the four 2" squares of background fabric, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 7) On the wrong side of the four 2" squares of fabric A, lightly mark a diagonal line as shown.
 8) Place one of the marked 2" squares of background fabric, right sides together, with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric C with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with one more 2" x 3-1/2" fabric C rectangles and one more of the marked 2" squares of background fabric.
 9) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 10) Take one of the units from Step 9 and place together with one of the 2" fabric A squares, right sides together, with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the remaining Step 9 units and one more 2" fabric A square.
 11) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A square. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 12) Take one of the units completed in Step 11 and piece together as shown with one of the units from Step 5. Repeat with the remaining Step 11 unit and one more Step 5 unit. Press the toward the Step 5 unit. These completed units should measure 3-1/2" square.
 13) Place one of the marked 2" squares of background fabric, right sides together, with one of the 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles of fabric C with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the remaining 2" x 3-1/2" fabric C rectangle and marked 2" square of background fabric.
Note: This unit, when completed, will be the mirror image of the unit completed in Step 11.
 14) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the background fabric square.
 15) Take one of the units from Step 14 and place together with one of the 2" fabric A squares, right sides together, with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the remaining Step 11 units and 2" fabric A square.
 16) Trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the fabric A square. The completed units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".
 17) Take one of the units completed in Step 16 and piece together as shown with one of the units from Step 5. Repeat with the remaining Step 16 unit and one more Step 5 unit. Press the toward the Step 16 unit. These completed units should measure 3-1/2" square.
 18) Take one of the units completed in Step 12 and one of the units completed in Step 16 and piece together as shown. Repeat with the remaining Step 12 and Step 16 units. Press the seam allowances to the left. The completed units should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".
 19) Take the two units completed in Step 18 and piece together as shown to complete the Butterfly quilt block. Press the seam allowance in either direction. The completed quilt block should measure 6-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
