Fabric

The Salem block uses three different fabrics.

 Fabric A

 Fabric B

 One background fabric


Cutting the fabric

This block requires:

 five 4-1/2" squares of background fabric
 eight 2-1/2" squares of fabric A
 twelve 2-1/2" squares of fabric B
 eight 2 1/2" squares of background fabric
 four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of fabric B
 four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of the background fabric


 Piecing the block

 1) Lightly mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the eight 2-1/2" squares of fabric A, the twelve 2-1/2" squares of fabric B, and the eight 2-1/2" squares of background fabric.
 2) Take one of the 4-1/2" squares of background fabric and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with three more of the 4-1/2" background fabric squares and 2-1/2" fabric A squares.

3) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric A.
 4) Take one of the units completed in Step 3 and one of the remaining 2-1/2" squares of fabric A and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining units from Step 3 and 2-1/2" fabric A squares.

5) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric A. The completed units should measure 4-1/2" square.
 6) Take the remaining 4-1/2" square of background fabric and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.

7) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 8) Take the unit completed in Step 7 and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.

9) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 10) Take the unit completed in Step 9 and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.

11) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 12) Take the unit completed in Step 9 and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line.

13) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B. This completed unit should measure 4-1/2" square.
 14) Take one of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and one of the 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of background fabric and three 2-1/2" squares of fabric B.

15) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B.
 16) Take one of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle units completed in Step 15 and one of the remaining 2-1/2" squares of fabric B and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 15 rectangle units and the three remining 2-1/2" squares of fabric B.

17) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward fabric B. These completed units should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".
 18) Take one of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of fabric B and one of the 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of fabric B and three 2-1/2" squares of background fabric.

19) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric.
 20) Take one of the units completed in Step 19 and one of the remaining 2-1/2" squares of background fabric and place them right sides together with the marked diagonal line placed as shown. Sew on the diagonal line. Repeat with the three remaining Step 19 units and the final three 2-1/2" squares of background fabric.

21) Trim 1/4" away from the sewn line and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. The completed units should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".
 22) Take one of the units completed in Step 19 and one of the units completed in Step 21 and piece together as shown. Press seam allowance toward the Step 21 unit. Repeat with the remaining Step 19 and Step 21 units. The completed units should measure 4-1/2" square.
 23) Piece the middle row of the Salem block by joining two of the units completed in Step 22 to the unit completed in Step 13 as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 13 unit. The finished row should measure 4-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 24) Piece one of the units completed in Step 22 with two of the units completed in Step 5 as shown to complete the top row of the Salem block. Press the seam allowances toward the Step 5 units. Repeat with the remaining Step 22 unit and Step 5 units to complete the bottom row of the Salem block. These two completed rows should measure 4-1/2" x 12-1/2".
 25) Piece the three rows created in Steps 23 and 24 together as shown to complete the Salem block. The finished block should measure 12 1/2" which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
