Quilting can be done by hand or by sewing machine. It is best to consider the batting used and the final care of the item when deciding whether to hand or machine quilt.

Batting - some battings are better for machine quilting and some are better for hand quilting. 100% cotton batting can be very hard to hand quilt. Polyester batting is easy to hand quilt, but can shift and cause puckering when machine quilting.
