Morning everyone,

Ohio99 sounds like such fun! Was working on my blocks for my first swap and had everything cut and measured - started piecing and the sashing didn't match the block length! Rechecked block instructions and remeasured - nope everything okay. Checked with person that sent instructions - maybe measurement was wrong. Of course I didn't buy extra fabric for the sashing - only what the block called for. Now have to go rebuy some more fabric - doesn't make me that sad - always find more material I just have to have! Going camping in Cook's Forest this weekend - first time there. We leave early tomorrow AM as I have the 3pm -3am shift tonight.

What is a good block for a boy's quilt? Has anyone ever made a quilt for a hunter or fisherman? If so, what blocks or patterns did you use?

Hope everyone has a great day and weekend!!

Hi, uys you all seem to be having so much fun. I was such a doofus, I could have participated even though I wasn't able to attend. When I read about the flowers and the pins I was once again reminded how special this group is. Way to go Leen and Julie.

Goot morgen!
I finally got over the case of fabric buying dysfunction and spent that $20.00 gift cert. from hancock fabs (formerly Minn. Fabs.) This time I went in prepared, I brought a couple of things I was working on and got fabs to go with them. I'm working on My second Mariner's medallion quilt and was determined to not buy anything but use my stash. I think free fabric counts! O.K., I will have to buy border fabrics.
A couple of weeks ago my DS had pink eye, we did the drops and my DD and DM actually gave my DS most of the drops. I was careful, I washed my hands whenever I gave him drops, they did not. Guess who now has the pink eye? ME! It's not fair!!! I look dreadful, like the morning after the night before, if you know what I mean! Ugh. I'm calling my son's Dr. to see if she will call in a Rx so I won't have to take time to go to the Dr.'s office. Fortunately, this does not affect sewing!
Stay cool (and Dry) every one and be blessed.

Well, I'm feeling fairly rested now, but still thrilled with how much fun I had with all the Ohio 99ers yesterday!

This morning I'm going to develop a "job jar" for those coming before the party today. Think I'll try to get some people to post so you hear from others "live and up close and personal."

Came home to a message that Shelli in Delaware won't make it after all - we'll miss you, Shel! Also got the message Jayne in Utah is overnight expressing her churn dash blocks and saw the posting from Alia on the BB page that she won't make it either! We're SO sorry to not get to meet you, Alia! Get better quickly!

I knew we would lose a few to illness and emergencies, but it's hard to accept these ladies won't be arriving--safe trip to everyone on the road today.

Included in our purchases for the party are two cases of bottled water - and Bev made me buy a case of toilet paper. All the Serials kept saying "Do you know how much water these people are drinking these days?" LOL My garage is stacked with cases of soft drinks--the chest freezer is loaded with ice and my refrigerator is bulging.

Got an e-mail from Bev this morning (her computer is still acting up but she managed to get on for a quick e-mail) and she was making cheese balls at 6 this morning - not for our party, but for a party her DD is having at their house tonight! In the e-mail, she asked me to remember to bring a multiple outlet power cord on Friday. Now I wonder why I'm supposed to bring a multiple outlet power cord and where I'm supposed to bring it to since I'm staying here at home all day????? Think she needs to go back to sleep for a while LOL

Hopefully we'll get some handquilting on Ridgeley's quilt done today. Everyone who has seen it so far has been very impressed! We're also going to provide some "work" for machine sewers on a project Glenda from Korea sent us (not to worry, Glenda, everything's fine!).

SUE IN GERMANY: Your package still hasn't arrived, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for today or tomorrow! Of course, I'm keeping the fingers crossed on the other hand hoping the package is late and Serial Quilters get to keep everything LOL!

LEEN IN TEXAS made great little "Ohio" pins that attach to the yellow yoyos for everyone....just one of many things going into the goodie bags for everyone (yes, we even have goodie bags!). Peg in Chicago managed to get contributions from quite a few companies for the goodie bags, so she's bringing that stuff with her when she comes today.

All for now....trying to organize myself for the day (it's a tough job, too). Cassi in Ohio

Ahhh It's alomost as good as a bath by candlelight! or S.E.X. at a rrreally Big Shhtore (for the "children" out there that was a great imitation of Ed Sullivan) What, you say, is so great??? My DH and DgS have gone on a 2nite, 2 day, camping/fishing trip and I got to stay home!! I was almost frantic before they left that a tire would go flat or someone (besides me) would get a stomach ache just from the sheer excitement of it all. In years past, when I got these little mini-vacations, I would roll out the pails and brushes; the vacuum and carpet cleaner and get everything really spiffy. I really don't know when or where I lost it, but I'm not going to look for that triumphant feeling of accomplishment. I told DH that I would NOT be doing any housework, that I planned to cut & sew 'til the wee hours if I wanted to; I might read part of a book; or I might just sit and watch a steamy movie in the privacy of my solitude!

One of my guild members sent me this...seemed sort of appropo for me and what I've been reading about the Ohio99ers:
Adult Resignation
I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year old again.
I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant.
I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks.
I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them.
I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my firends on a hot summer's day.
I want to return to a time when life was simple. when all you knew were colors, multiplaction tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset.
I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good.
I want to believe that anything is possible.
I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overy excited by the little things again.
I want to live simple again.
I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones.
I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.
So...here's my chekbook and my car=keys, my credit card bills and my 401K statements. I am offically resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first, 'cause...

Well, spent today (and all of last week!) finishing up in my sewing room. First snoopy dance because I can walk around without fear of slipping and falling, and second SD for finishing two tiny projects, but they have taken forever to just do the finishing touches. Now on to the outer space invasion (many ufo's).

Celia and Marcie, I'm thinking of you both, safe travel to Loon'Ms and have lots of fun for us all. And Ohio '99, keep up the posts Cassie - and have a great weekend.

Bill and Faith - remember that you are both enfolded in our love and care.

Just a quick note to update you on the progress of Ohio 99. I was almost out the door to head for the hotel to meet everyone for dinner when the lens of my reading glasses fell out - wouldn't you know it?!!! Left them with DH to fix. He also put up the sign with a minimum of protest!

Hannelore arrived and we met briefly - she's been up for LOTS of hours and was headed for bed, so we had to settle for a quick hello. Eight of us had dinner together - Bev, Brenda, Bertie, Susan in Montana, Barbara in Spring Valley, Melinda in Indy, and Doni. We managed to disrupt the restaurant reasonably well--the lady at the next table said as she was leaving that it sounded like we had a wonderful event going on and we should call the newspaper about it! (We did contact the newspaper a few weeks ago but never heard back. Guess they don't recognize newsworthiness when it's staring them in the face LOL)

When we got back to the hotel, most of us camped out in the lobby. Bev took Barbara and Susan/Montana to the grocery store to get snacks for their rooms. Bev reported these two were quite embarassing to take to the store. Seems Susan thought the motorized handicapped carts might be fun to play around with!

Kathy and Just Me Sue picked up Susan in Fresno and Kathi in Idaho at the airport and they got to the hotel around 10 p.m. so we caused even more disruption in the hotel lobby - lots of laughter! It's amazing to me how it just feels like I've known all these people for years. We fell quickly into laughing and trading insults, needling each other, and just generally having a great time. For anyone who ever has the opportunity to meet up with fellow BBers, take advantage of it! It's a wonderful experience.

We're so sorry to know that Jayne won't be making it - get better soon!

Oh yes....when I called Brenda and Melinda's room from the lobby, a voice answered singing, "Well hello, Mrs. Robinson." Yes, it was Bertie. I don't think we'll ever forget Bertie and the Bernina Boy!

Well, it's almost midnight. Everyone is heading over here by about noon tomorrow. I'm going to try to get some sleep. Can't wait for the rest of you to get here!

I learned a very important lesson tonight that I would like to pass on to all of you about the BB. It can be painful.
I was sitting here minding everybody elses business, catching up on the postings that I had not read today. When low and behold out of the bushes jumps "How to bathe a cat part 1". This was funny because it was so true. I did LOL slightly. Next came the classes for men. This was also humorous and cause some gentle LOL. But then, the cruelest stroke of all was "Bathing a cat part 2". I ROFLOL so hard and it hurt so bad. You see I had minor dental surgery Monday and any movement of my lower jaw causes pain in differing degrees. The pain increases as the laughter increases. SO! could we please consider rating the postings. You know like those disclaimers they have on TV shows for violence or adult language. Maybe ours could be on a sliding scale of one to ten. One being a mild giggle and ten being a serious ROFLOL attack. Those of us recuperating from not only dental surgery, but appendectomies, gall bladder, ect..
Just kidding! :^)THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS:^). It feels good after a hot day of dealing with other peoples problems. The midwest is supposed to get some rain Tueday or Wednesday but I will believe it when it gets here. I pray everybody stays well during this heat wave.
Have a wonderful Ohio'99!

thanks so much for the information on your weather. love the education that I get with the internet. I will now think of you in the midwest with some sympathy.
I am making a Y2K quilt kindof, for a friend in my guild as a thank you. The ladies in my quilt guild donated the 2.5" squares and siggys and I am putting it together. It is going together pretty well. I am surprized because I have lots of different fabric, lots of different cutters and the accuracy is pretty good. I am making a 2000 piece hexegon quilt for my Y2K and I am still basting the hexes, so I am now seeing what you guys with the squares are going through. I am enjoying the process! I know that mine won't be finished until 2001, but that is okay.
Have a great time in Ohio, keep cool and don't laugh too hard!

Hello all! I just heard today that you should drink 8 oz. extra water per day for every 25 lbs. you are over "ideal" weight. The same person that told me this said that you also burn more calories if you drink cold water because your body has to warm it. Hmmmm.....sounds too easy.... I'm going to check out the webpage on water that was posted. Maybe these two things are true.
Hair coloring: DD (Rachel from San Diego) managed to turn her hair calico (as in just like a calico cat!!) four months before her wedding. She was a blond (as in how I got my e-mail addy) and put a temporary color in to turn her hair black for Halloween. Her friend (?) that was helping (??) her thought that she would need to leave the coloring in longer because it was starting out so light. They forgot that colored hair holds color more and they should have left it in for less time. After waiting weeks for the color to fade, there were two coloring/bleaching attempts. Roots were blond and RED, some of the black came out and there were blond and red splotches all over. 5-1/4 hours and $130 at the Penney's salon (with a promise to them that she would not TOUCH her hair with anything until after her wedding!!!) Rachel is now a brunette. Happy ending to the story: the bride had hair for her wedding. Whew!

The REAL way to bathe a cat
1. scrub toilet and flush several times.
2. fill toilet with warm water and add a squirt of pet shampoo.
3. drop cat in toilet and slam lid shut
4. sit on lid - cat's efforts to free itself will generate a good deal of sudsing and washing motions
5. Flush toilet a couple of times to rinse cat.
6. Leap off toilet seat, dash out the door and slam it securely shut because the kitty will erupt from the bowl as if jet propelled
7. Leave kitty to sulk and dry itself.

Keep in mind this is a JOKE, and not to actually be done!

Subject: How to give a cat a bath
E-mail Address: kohlwesm@bunt.com

Sorry for the length of this but I was just about ROFLOL. Anyone with a cat will appreciate this advice.

> How To Bathe A Cat
(Note: Jeffery LaCroix is a veterinarian with an office in Wilmington. Hewrites a column for the Morning Star called "From Paws to Tails."
Here is his response to a letter regarding bathing a cat:)
Dear Dr. LaCroix: I've heard that cats never have to be bathed, and that they have some sort of special enzyme in their saliva that keeps them clean.
This doesn't sound believable to me because there are definite "kitty" odors on my couch and dirty cat paw prints on our white hearth. Is this true about the saliva? If we do decide to give "Nice Kitty" a bath, how do we do that?
- NSP, Wilmington
Dear NSP: Fortunately for you, several years ago a client gave me a written set of instructions about cat bathing which I am privileged to share with you:
Cat Bathing As A Martial Art
A. Know that although the cat has the advantage of quickness and lack of concern for human life, you have the advantage of strength. Capitalize on that advantage by selecting the battlefield. Don't try to bathe him in an open area where he can force you to chase him. Pick a very small bathroom.
If your bathroom is more than four feet square, I recommend that you get in the tub with the cat and close the sliding-glass doors as if you were about to take a shower. (A simple shower curtain will not do.B. Know that a cat has claws and will not hesitate to remove all the skin from your body. Your advantage here is that you are smart and know how to dress to protect yourself. I recommend canvas overalls tucked into high-top construction boots, a pair of steel-mesh gloves, an army helmet, a hockey face-mask, and a long-sleeved flak jacket.
C. Use the element of surprise. Pick up your cat nonchalantly, as if to simply carry him to his supper dish. (Cats will not usually notice your strange attire. They have little or no interest in fashion as a rule.)
D. Once you are inside the bathroom, speed is essential to survival. In a single liquid motion, shut the bathroom door, step into the tub enclosure, slide the glass door shut, dip the cat in the water and squirt him with shampoo. You have begun one of the wildest 45 seconds of your life.
E. Cats have no handles. Add the fact that he now has soapy fur, and the problem is radically compounded. Do not expect to hold on to him for more than two or three seconds at a time. When you have him, however, you must remember to give him another squirt of shampoo and rub like crazy. He'll then spring free and fall back into the water, thereby rinsing himself off. (The national record for cats is three latherings, so don't expect too much.)
F. Next, the cat must be dried. Novice cat bathers always assume this part will be the most difficult, for humans generally are worn out at this point and the cat is just getting really determined. In fact, the drying is simple compared with what you have just been through. That's because by now the cat is semi-permanently affixed to your right leg. You simply pop the drain plug with your foot, reach for your towel and wait. (Occasionally, however, the cat will end up clinging to the top of your army helmet. If this happens, the best thing you can do is to shake him loose and to encourage him toward your leg.) After all the water is drained from the tub, it is a simple matter to just reach down and dry the cat.
In a few days the cat will relax enough to be removed from your leg. He will usually have nothing to say for about three weeks and will spend a lot of time sitting with his back to you. He might even become psychoceramic and develop the fixed stare of a plaster figurine. You will be tempted to assume he is angry. This isn't usually the case. As a rule he is simply plotting ways to get through your defenses and injure you for life the next time you decide to give him a bath.
But at least now he smells a lot better.

I was thinking in my "green with envy mind" that we should just talk about all those quilters getting together this week, you know make up bad things to say about each of them etc. Sorta like Junior High or High School. Wouldn't that be fun? (I hope the BB police know that I am joking).

It is hot here today but I saw our town bag lady digging through the thift shop dumpster with a winter knit cap on pulled way down her face. She was holding an umbrella for shade to keep cool. Maybe she needs to take up residence with Dr. Ruth. lol

Seriously, have fun everyone.

Cassi, I am enjoying every posting that you are making about Ohio 99! You all must be having sooooo much fun! I will be sure and check the archives when I get home August 9th from my vacation. I want to read what you all did and said! You are such a good poster!
Hey, You Maine 99ers - let us know how yours turned out, too!
Kristine - what colors are in your Bear Paw Quilt? Our guild did one up in White on White and Navy blue with tiny, tiny white flowers in it. Looks solid from a distance. We raffle one off every October at our Quilt Show, and this is the one this year. It is just beautiful!
Rosalie - I know exactly how you feel! I look forward to reading the postings every day. Will miss them next week.
It may be hot here, but I am inside most of the time and forget about the heat. Agree with the humidity part of it. It is much warmer here than western NY used to be. We used to live there and thought it was hot in the summers. At least there, it got cool during the night and a fan in the window did wonders - here we need air conditioning! We bought a window unit the first summer we moved here (west central Ohio - almost Indiana).
That reminds me - thanks to whoever mentioned a quilt show in Berne. If I get a chance I might run over there Saturday - maybe.... As small as Berne is I will be able to find it. We camped there just two weekends ago in Amishville.
My best to you, Faith and Bill.
Toodles everyone! Ilona in Ohio

Subject: Ohio 99 HAS BEGUN!!!
E-mail Address: Ohioccb@cwix.com

We're off and running with the preview day of Ohio 99...the official day starts tomorrow! Backyard Susan and I picked Doni up at the airport--Bev made these HUGE yellow yoyos stuck on paint stirrers for us to carry, which was totally embarassing! The security guard thought it was cute....Susan and I kept trying to get the other one to carry it! It crossed my mind to lose it somehow, but I figured Bev would kill me if I did, so it came back home with us.

But here comes a lady off the plane, looking at us and saying, "Is that a yellow yoyo?" And it was Doni! She is cute and charming and funny -- all the things you would expect, and yes, she's right in saying she's a little bit shy, but I think she felt comfortable pretty quickly! And yes...she wore her overalls (forgot to ask about the hat, but I didn't see one LOL).

Soon after we got back to my house, Leen in Texas arrived with her sister, Diane, then Bev and Just Me Sue arrived with lunch. We ate, and laughed, and then Serial Quilters Kathy and Judy arrived as well. We worked on a sign to put up above the front door tomorrow....now I just have to convince DH to hang it this evening! Have prepared some of the food and will finish up tomorrow.

Right now everyone has left for the hotel/home/airport. Susan in Montana (heaven help me, another Sue/Susan) and Barb in - oh gosh, is it San Diego? Can't remember. Anyway, they both get in around 6. Susan in Fresno (another Susan, groan) had her flight delayed and may miss a connection, so her options are arriving at 6 or at 9. Either way works out, since Kathi in Idaho is getting in around 9 as well. Bev has the dinnertime run to the airport and Just Me Sue and Kathy are doing the 9 p.m. pick up.

Melinda and Brenda are on their way...so's Bertie. We'll be gathering this evening at the hotel to greet everyone. I'm not sure if anyone else is arriving today, but surely we'll discover them! I predict this will not be a quiet bunch LOL!

JULIE IN GEORGIA....sent a lovely bouquet of flowers with best wishes for Ohio 99. It just arrived about an hour ago. It's beautiful, and thanks so much for thinking of us, Julie!

Well, that's about it for now. Will try to report more later tonight or early tomorrow morning!

HELLO BBer's - LONG TIME NO SEE!! YES, I AM STILL
ALIVE AND STILL QUILTING.

First of all, to Cassi and Bev and everyone else participating
in OHIO '99..... have a great time.....

Secondly....It's been weeks and weeks since I posted.....
I was wondering if any BB readers, either old or
new are going to be attending Eleanor Burns' quilting
seminars (Grandmothers Garden)(Double Pinwheel) on
August 12th, 13th and 14th in Georgetown, Ontario, at the
HobbyHorse Quilt Shop.

Are the BB readers still doing the yellow Yo-Yo thing
and should I bother to make one up and wear it??

I'd love to meet up with any BB readers from Ontario or
elsewhere who might be attending this seminar. I will be
there for the Saturday "Double Pinwheel"!!

Thirdly...... several months back, someone (sorry I can't
remember who) posted a cake recipe using only an
Angel Food cake mix and a can of pineapple. I remember these
were the only two ingredients, but my problem is, I can't
remember the size of can of pineapple I'm supposed to use!

Could someone take a minute to email me the details if they remember!!

Thanks so much, and hello again to everyone.....

BEST WISHES to the Ohio '99 group. I think you girls are going to have a great time.

HIGH BEDS---reading your posts reminded me of the time the neighborhood Garden Club met at my house. One of the newer members was a forty-something who had just moved here after living in Brooklyn, NY all her life. She saw our high, 18th century reproduction Rice Bed (it's a "southern thing", y'all!), and came out and found me with a funny look on her face and the biggest eyes I had ever seen, and asked "HOW do you get in that thing at night?" Did I ever LOL! After all, she had never seen anything like that in Brooklyn, and she's only five feet tall. But it DOES make the making of the bed much easier in general, as well as easy on the old lower back. Also easier to get out of in the morning. Just roll out instead of "getting up". I love mine!!!

I used to have just one futon....but DH thought that was just tooooo hard for him! We don't have back problems...this is a very "firm" bed. It means that when we go camping and sleep on a thin closed-cell foam pad....there isn't much difference!!!(LOL)!
I use a standard dust ruffle over the sheet of plywood, so you can't tell that it is any different than a standard bed, except that I have enough room under it to use one of those rubbermaid gift wrap tubs under it along with other stuff. The quilt that DMIL made fits perfectly...but she did measure that bed before making the quilt. The bed takes standard-sized sheets, so no problem there. This is not a bed that kids would have fun jumping on!!!

We don't have AC....don't need it here in the Northeast (teeeheeeheee!). Isn't that a joke this summer??? Usually we only have two weeks in August that are like this.... Anyone for global warming???LOL.
It is the humidity that gets to you. I can take the desert heat...don't even realize that you are getting dehydrated. But that humid heat....yechhh! Only place worse: The Amazon. Yep, if you think the humidity is bad here....
In the Amazon, we had our t-shirts in zip-lock bags to keep them dry. You would put one on and for a few minutes it was dry....then it got soggy. You always had a layer of moisture on your skin...a kind of sheen. Made it really hard to keep cool. NOTHING can evaporate. It is a rain forest after all. It was just the end of the dry season, too. It gets even worse in the rainy season. THAT was oppressive humidity. I try to remember what it was like when I think that it is too hot and humid here in Western Mass!

Instead of the Amazon, we are going to be cruising up the coast of Maine in the next two weeks, so we'll wave to Loon and Monica and all of the other BB'ers in New Hampshire and Maine as we go up the coast.

Today has to be the biggest bummer. I should be at the airport meeting Kathi from Idaho and getting on the plane to Cinci but where am I? I am stuck at home with a temperature and not getting to go anywhere. I have had an acute kidney infection and so I have to miss out on Ohio 99. I am overnighting my Churn Dash blocks and my sample block and my elephant to Cassie and hope that you guys post and keep up updated.
Sorry that I had to miss this - I have looked forward to coming since the beginning, but guess that it is more important that I take care of my health.
Have lots of fun and Kathi - I will see you on your return on Sunday.

Good Morning Everyone!

I chuckled over all of the "high" bed tales. When we were married 10 yrs ago, my DH's aunt was going into a nursing home. Since we were starting out, we received a lot of her furniture. Our bedroom set is antique with a high bed. It comes above my hip(I am 5'7"). I have gotten so used to it that I feel weird when I sleep on a hotel bed. I made a queen size quilt for the bed, which has a double mattress. It has a nice drape and covers down to the siderails. One advantage to the "high" bed, Suitcase Storage!! Can't fit hardly anything under a low bed.

I grew up in NJ and lived in MD or TN until last year. While I love my family and friends, I DO NOT miss the HHH!! The only reason I go back is to visit them. My DD#2 has asthma, but not up here. When we went back at the beginning of the month, she had breathing problems almost every day. I was so happy to come home to the cool. Winter here is not bad either, you just have to dress for the weather. IMHO, you can always add layers to keep warm, but if you want to cool off in the heat, there is only so much you can take off before you get arrested! And even the birthday suit is too hot sometimes! Give me cold weather anyday. I will make more quilts!

I got a call from my machine man yesterday. I should get it back tomorrow. Thank God it only needed a cleaning and tuneup! I am about to go crazy waiting. A friend offered to let me look at her machine! I almost took her up on it. I don't think I ever need to worry about doing drugs, I can't stand sewing machine withdrawl!

Well, time to get to HQ my DH's bear paw quilt. I want to MQ the background of it when I get my baby back so I have to be ready for it. Only 3 blocks left to HQ paw prints.

Have a great day everyone. Do your best to keep cool and do check on elderly neighbors!

Hello everyone, this is the first time I have been able to even read the board in the last week, as I have been really busy getting ready for Marcie Teacup, and her family to arrive. Well, the moment is very near, they are scheduled to drive in my driveway at any minute, and I am sooooooo excited, I just can't sit still. I have been back and forth to the window more times than I care to admit!!!!

They set out on Tuesday morning, so it has been a very long drive for them, although they have stayed in Hotels for two nights. Just can't wait, I am like a kid waiting for Christmas!!!!!

Have a wonderful, wonderful time to all the Ohio 99ers, - safe travel, and great fun. Doni, if you have arrived at Cassi's give her a hug from me please. Marcie and I will phone you guys on Friday evening at Cassi's to say Hi.

Monday we all leave for Loon Marie's- golly the excitement is just too much!!!!!

Well, must go and check the window again, now that I have finished all my work in readiness for company, perhaps I can stay up to date with the chat page- I know that I have missed so much news, but more than that, - I have missed you all.

Be back later when I have this lass from Ontario safely here.

Hi Marie, see you Monday!!!!!
Hugs to all,

Subject: Santa Clara Quilt Show -- October
E-mail Address: sondra@cs.stanford.edu

I have been looking at the website for the Quilt Show being held in Santa Clara at the end of October. It's quite an amazing thing. At any rate, it got me to start thinking about something.

For those of you who are planning to attend (I know there are a lot of Calif quilters on the BB, as well as others from around the country who may attend and wondered what you thought about getting together on Saturday the 30th for dinner, or Sunday morning for breakfast? It would give us a chance to sit and visit, as well as share ideas, and hear what everyone has learned during their time at the show. Please send me an e-mail with your interest, and I'll start to compile a list. It's something to think about. Just let me know.

I've been forgetting to tell you about fabric I got from "Big Horn Quilts". I don't have any connection with them other than their website is bookmarked, but I sent an order in for some Moda Marbles for a baby quilt, and was pleasantly surprised to get the fabric before my check even cleared the bank. I was truly amazed. The fabric is first rate, no problems. Even got a "Thanks" on my order form from whomever filled the order. I thought that was a great touch. I wish "The Stitchery" would adopt such policies when you order from them. I'm still waiting on an order, and no word. Good Customer Service means a lot these days! Anyway, the website is great at Big Horn Quilts and as I said, the fabrics I got were terrific.

Have a great day!

Have any of you ever sat and cried over a full email box? I've stumbled into friendheaven on earth. I'm not depressed, just overwhelmed by you all. I've been reading your postings here and am fascinated by the responses to one another. I'm a native New Yorker, have lived in Virginia for 28 years, but still have a little of that reserve NYrs are so infamous for. That's being polite. Enough of that, I finished my first bed size quilt for my grandson Ryan in Florida. It hangs straight and looks great. Now I'm involved in making a quilt for my DH of his life. Using squares from states and places he has been, using solid squares for the important years in his life, like when he joined the navy, etc. All the little squares are swapped. The larger life square will be appliqued with things like the brooklyn bridge (my version) for where he was born, etc., little boys and girls for our kids and grandkids. It all started seeing postings for Y2K quilts. Can't picture me joining 2000 pieces together. Had a bad home ec teacher way back then and my sm and i don't like each other very much. I love to handquilt. Well, I guess that's about all for now except that we have a new grandbaby, Brittney Amanda, born just 6 weeks ago. My how things have changed. You have to read all these books and then wonder why it doesn't work, Baby can't read, silly children!! I'm being a very nice mother in law though. Sore tongue mind you, but nice. Have to go. For those of you (Californians and others) wondering about the deaths due to the "90 plus"
weather in the midwest, the main reason
(IMHO) is the humidity. It is like breathing through a hot wet towel here. Those of us with any respiratory problems (I have mild asthma) are MISERABLE. I suspect a lot of the deaths are
people who are sick to begin with, then
have no A/C, and can't breathe and their bodies
just sort of give up.

I am incredibly thankful for A/C right now.
Otherwise,I'd be as near to naked as I could get
and gasping for breath.

There also may be some people who, pardon the
expression, act like idiots and think they have to stick to their lunch-hour jogging schedule (yes, I have seen people out jogging in the middle of the day in this). We upper midwesterners
have to take a tip from the deep south and the Latin countries: Move slow. Drink lots of fluids.
Don't get angry about stuff. Take a siesta midday. Don't worry about exercising if it's
too dang hot.

This heat wave should prepare me well for when I
move "all the way" to Durant, OK. It was hot
down there, but nowhere near as humid. It
will feel like a relief to get back there.

Anita: I had almost the same experience last year when we were forced to buy a new bed just before DH's back surgery. I would have never thought of it, but on the Wed. before the surgery the Dr. asked "what kind of bed do you own?" When we told him a waterbed, he said to go out and buy another bed asap or DH could sleep in the guest room for a week or so, as he wouldn't be able to get up out of the waterbed. We only had 2 days to shop, didn't have the months to comparison shop that we usually do. The end results were a beautiful new bedroom set, as the night stands were to short, the old dresser looked really beat up, and didn't match! We do love the bed, and are both sleeping much better with the "pillow top", I don't even have those night sweats I was blaming on being 50! I think the waterbed traped in all the heat.
Finished the quilt top and have it "spray basted" as of last night. It is Lopsided Hearts, did it in my favorite football team colors and plan to actually KEEP it for myself!
Has anyone else used the Sullivan's basting spray? Do you like it? This is my first time, hummm- does that make me a spray basting virgin?

I lived in Nova Scotia for four years. I never got over people complaining about the cold when it was about -15 Celcius. It's soooooo cold, they would whine. I would remind them they had never been to Alberta or Saskatchewan in January! Oh, but it's dry cold, they would say. Excuse me? But when it is -40 Celcius plus a windchill that could bring it to -60 Celcius it is just bloody cold! When they can withstand that, then I'll let them complain about the cold. I will, however, give into the humidity argument. We get muggy here, but it is never terribly humid, not like on the coast. I'm just looking forward to me brother's fiance (who is from New Orleans) first visit up here in the middle of winter. We'll see if the wedding will still be on!

Have a good one everyone! Faith, remember, take some time for yourself and Bill will love you even more for it. Hope you are enjoying the family visit as well.

Anita- your bed story reminded me of the purchasing of a "big girl bed" for our 3-year-old this past year. We found a beautiful antique iron 3/4 bed last summer for her, stripped it, painted it & special-ordered the mattress & box springs. Got everything all ready & set it up - the top of the mattress is taller than our daughter, she practically has to pole vault into it & I need a step stool to sit on it. The dust ruffle is 22" long - Thank God I sew & have a ruffler or everyone would see her extensive collection of dust bunnies. We didn't realize that when the bed frame was made, mattresses were alot thinner & I don't know if they had box springs as we know them. Oh well - it'll look great with a quilt on it & that's all that really matters.

DH has been a desert rat all his life, and it's not unusual for the temp to get above 110F around here (though this summer hasn't been too bad.) Anyway, when DH was a teenager he visited Chicago one summer and was sweatin like a pig (do pigs sweat?) and some woman commented that she could tell he was from cold country. Yeah right. He said the most miserable he's ever been was during a heat wave in Washington, D.C.

I bought a John Flynn frame and thought I could put it on top of my regular frame for the HQ. I managed to split the end of my 2X2 so we're waiting for the glue to dry.

Sometimes the hotels give the University better rates, so just let me know. DH might be sorry I learned about this show. I was telling him last night that there was a show coming up in October. Thanks to everyone about the ideas for the tulip quilt not fitting on the new bed. Great ideas!

E-mail Address: AnitaAnnII@aol.com

Hi Everyone,
When we were building our new house I told DH we needed a new bed and bedroom furniture. New bedroom was a lot bigger and I was tired of the old waterbed. DH and I had a big discussion about what kind of mattress to get – conventional or soft-sided waterbed, king or queen. DH’s answer, “Why are you asking me? You’re going to do what you want”. He was right but I wanted him to at least think he had some input. When a friend of mine and I were looking for furniture, we saw a bed that the top of the bed was almost waist height on me. I’m 5’6”. We laughed and laughed about this bed being so high. I ordered our furniture from an Amish store and got the king-size bed. The owner said, “I’m having the frame for the mattresses dropped as low as we can for the new thicker mattresses”. Me, “Unhuh”. They had one nightstand so I said just have another one made. He said, “I’m having the nightstands made a couple inches higher because of the thicker mattresses so I’ll have two made”. Me, “Unhuh”. Still didn’t get it. Went and picked out a new mattress set – very expensive. Looked normal in the store. I did know enough to buy extra deep mattress pad and sheets. Couple of months later the furniture was delivered so I called for the mattress and box springs to be delivered. The delivery guys brought in the box springs in two pieces and of course of 9 lb mini-dachshund had to be where the action is. When they were bringing in this huge top mattress I thought, if this falls on Dauber it would kill her so I took Dauber out to the living room and held her while they put the mattress on the bed. As the second delivery guy left he said, “Certainly would hate to fall out of that bed!” which I thought was a strange remark. When I went in and saw the bed, I can’t tell you how sick I was. It was almost to my waist! DH was not impressed. When we went to bed that night DH remarked, “If this thing was any higher I’d get a nosebleed”. Next morning he’s lying there looking at the ceiling and commenting, “Now I know why I didn’t put a ceiling fan in this room, I’d hit my head on it when I sat up”. When I sit on the edge I can’t reach the floor. We have chair at the end for the dog to get in – way to high for her to jump. DH and I can’t flip the top mattress – DH and oldest DS have to do it with a lot of groaning. Normal dust ruffle is three inches too short. Couldn’t find anything wide or long enough to begin to cover it, so I quickly made a quilt. Its 114” X 125” and just covers the top mattress. The wood sides and footboard cover the box springs. Sheets and mattress pad barely fit on it. I went back to the store and checked under the set I had bought – it was on ~1 inch platform. Couple of months later my best friend asked DH how he liked the new bed. DH stated he hated it, so she dropped it. Later I asked him what didn’t he like. He told me he was going to have to get a third person in there because he felt like he was sleeping alone. I moved my pillows to the center and he’s happy other than he misses the heat from the waterbed – not me! I love the bed, much more comfortable and it is easy to make being higher - DH has gotten use to it.

Subject: Heat, Humidity & Air Conditioning
E-mail Address: creinke@mindspring.com

Growing up in New England, then speding 14 years in SE Michigan before immigrating to the deep south, I've experienced heat where it isn't usual. Besides the humidity, the other problems are lack of air conditioning and the body not being used to so much heat.

Here in the deep south, we are used to being able to get out of the heat in pretty much any building. Also, free refills on drinks are standard, and during heat waves restaurants invite construction workers, etc. to eat inside even if they bring their lunch. (I'd never seen anything like that in the north, way to go south!!!)

The lack of air conditioning is a real problem in cities or with elderly folks who are afraid to leave their windows open. Since older folks bodies don't give as good signals that they are overheating, they can dehydrate or go into heat stroke if they aren't careful.

Hi Everyone, All those going to Ohio 99 stand up and wave to the rest of us. This also includes anyone going to any quilt show anywhere in the world. Just wish it was me.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Just read that New England is the best region to raise children and Maine ranks No. 1 among the states, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Children's Rights Council. The Midwest was ranked as the second best region and the Southwest as the worst. Louisiana and D.C. were last on the list. Alabama was almost in the middle and Utah was in the upper half. So move over in Maine, I'm moving up as soon as I can. LOL! DH would rather go to the Middle East than move where there is more than an inch of snow once in every 3 years.

There is a website for those of you drinking water like me. It is supposed to have tips on a water consumption plan. I saw it on the label of the water bottle I bought to measure the amount of water I'm drinking. The site is <www.water.com> It also says on the label that "Proper hydration provides health benefits such as smoother skin, suppressed appetite and proper fat metabolism." I'm going to check it out as I pour more water down my throat.

As for quilting, I'm still at it. Finally got my sewing table cleared off and will start my DWR this weekend. Today I have a bunch of quilters coming over for a potluck lunch. This means not a heavy dinner tonight of course.
Got to go make the dessert....It's light not too much butter....only a stick! LOL

Everyone have a great day.
Later, Sarah in Alabama where it is going to be super hot and super humid today.

Hi everybody,
Just catching up on the BB, and boy did I miss a lot in just a week! I haven't even got to read the back archive from last week. Yesterday the computer wouldn't work right and I couldn't post.
Hair color- my DD#1 had beautiful brown hair until about 2 yrs ago. She went blond, it looks good now but took us a long time to get used to it. Her dear brothers however give her every "blonde joke" that they get. The current one is "You have such beautiful blond hair, why did you ever dye the roots that UGLY color of brown?" LOL
Dogs & kennels- last year we put our dog in a kennel that cost a lot and was "gauranteed" to take excellent care of her. Well, she smelled so-o-o bad and was really hyper and then she got sick after we picked her up. We had to bath her outside before we dared let her into the house. I spent a week doctoring the poor critter. This year...we left her with some dear friends. It was much cheaper and when we picked her up she smelled good and was relaxed. In fact she's so laid back right now that my DH wants to know what they did to calm her down! She's Lab/Golden Retriever and at only 1 1/2 yr, she was really bouncy.
Chicken soup- you can sign yourself up and it's great! I've read some of their books and it's hard to read a little at a time. You just want more and more.
Vacation- we had a good time at Wildwood, (4 teens and a 9 yr old kid in a RV). On Mon we climbed the Cape Pointe lighthouse which is 157 1/2 feet high. Quite an accomplishment for someone who doesn't even do ladders!!! But boy, my legs still hurt from the steps- my DS#1 said 199 steps.
Now I can't wait to quilt again. I don't take it along on camping vacations like that because of a bad experience years ago. When a project that I'd worked on for hours was ruined by spilled juice.
TTFN happy Thursday to all

Hi,

I am having more fun than any person deserve with this BB. I have been trying to keep up this week.
Faith- Love to both you and Bill. Take advantage of this time with hospice and family there. It is O.K.!!! to get some rest and go outside and breath some fresh air.
Patty in Northern California - I too am a Californian. Breed, born and raised there. Lived in both the Southern and Northern parts of the state. I have been transplanted to the Midwest. The difference between 90 degrees in Ca. and 90 degrees east of the Rockies is humidity. Where I live humidity under 30% is almost unheard of. In Southern Ca. 30% was considered a damp day. When the body can't get cooled by evaporation or air conditioning the body temperature just keeps going up. This deadly particularly to the young, sick and elderly. My DS works in construction in 100 degree weather with the humidity at 70 or 80% humidity. He is fine because of the fact that they do as much work in the cool of the day as possible and are off by usually by 3:00PM. Those of us blessed with low humidity,or air conditioning have to remember those who don't have. Check your elderly or sick neighbors and consider contributing to your local department of aging or who ever in your area helps people keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Patty say HI! to all the quilters in Ca. for me if you know of any quilt shows in either end of the state the first week of October could you let me know. Thanks.
Have fun at Ohio'99 every one! Well it time to get to work. Have a great day.

Ok, so I am from California so if I ask a stupid question, just look at the first six words of this sentence. In the paper this morning they were speaking about the heat wave in the midwest and that 5 people had died because of it. but they were saying that the temps were over 90. Here when the temps are 90, we celebrate because it is cool. Remember, 3 weeks ago when my hi was 115? So, what are your normal temps? Or am I missing something here?
Monica, I have been drinking 64 oz of water every day for ten years and I don't go to the bathroom any more then anyone else. Your body gets used to the water after a couple of weeks and you are not in the bathroom as much anymore. Yes, in the beginning I saw the inside of many bathrooms, but any more, I go every couple of hours and never get up during the night. I also drink water at night and rarely get up during the night to go. so ladies, keep drinking your water, the path to the bathroom will slow down after awhile and you will feel so much better.
Sue in Germany, the mini rr were started this afternoon and they are going to be beautiful! We have great ideas.
The California State Fair opens on august 20 and ends labor day. another reason to see beautiful quilts!

Just a comment on the book that lists the quilt stores...I think the stores probably have to pay to be listed. They are many stores missing...just check out the Canadian provinces...some are entirely missing even though they do have quilting stores. I think I would be checking the yellow pages of the towns/cities that I was visiting...not strictly relying on that book. IMHO...Cynthia

Evening,
Well today I had my friends over to tie Amanda's college quilt. Amanda is the daughter of a good friend. About 8 of my friends showed up to help. Three had sewed before, but the others were really non-sewers, yet they were ready to try anything. We spent the first 2 hours talking and eating, then we finally got to the quilt. I had already pieced the top. It was all pinned together, the group was just going to tie and sew the binding. How funny it was. Some spent most of their time getting their needles threaded. Bonnie kept changing seats so that she never had to sew any of the binding on. But what fun we had. By the time everyone left the quilt was tied, the bindings sewn, and we even had a label signed and sewn on the back. Everyone was so pleased with the finished product. Before Amanda's mom left she took the quilt and folded it so only the backing showed and she put the label right on top so it looked just like the card. We hadn't told Amanda about the quilt at all, so I'm sure it will be a big surprise.

O.K. everyone, stop talking about all these quilt shows that I can't go to! I'm getting bummed.
First I couldn't go to Ohio, then IQF at Houston and now thw PIQF. I'll stop whining now.
On a good note, I do get to go to the Detriot area at the end of Aug. to visit a friend and her new baby. Been there many times and know all the quilt shops. I'm looking for BBers that I might be able to meet (on that note, Marge in MI, will you email me?). We will also be going to, well we don't know yet, but I'll post when we do! Hope to meet some of you!
Keep cool every one and be blessed!

Good evening all. I'm coming out of lurking this evening. The sun actually came out here for awhile this afternoon, but the big dark clouds were still hanging around the perimeter of the valley. I wish I could send the cool, rainy weather to all of you who are too hot.

Faith, it sounds like you are exhausted. I hope now with family visiting, you will be able to get off to do something for yourself to rejuvenate. Hospice is also good for this too, speaking from experience, Hospice is a godsend. Take advantage of them!!!

jdb- I a so looking forward to meeting you in August. I just know we're all going to love having you visit. And you'll be my first BB'er from "outside" Alaska.

I chatted with North Pole Susan, in WI last evening. She is getting together with Nancy the snowbird, and they are going to visit Ridgeley. She's looking forward to meeting them both.
I hang out so much at her place when she is home, I have gotten alot done with her being gone. I finished a tedious, paper peiced crazy cabin quilt top, and am now working on my snowman blocks for the swap. Should have them done before long.

To all of you Ohio 99er's.... Have a great time!!!

Welcome Rosalie, stick around, you'll have hundreds of new quilting friends.

Monica, I'm glad your recuperation is going well.

Well, I'm gonna settle down at my machine for the evening. Good nite all!

Yo, Cat Woman! Dr. Ruth won't be at the Seattle airport. The only airline she flies is Broomstick International. Besides, she's deathly allergic to kitties, they make her wheeze and sneeze and break out in hives. She might be lurking in the background, to see if Sandy Toes' toes are really sandy. Will she be wearing sandals?

SONDRA: Try putting a coordinating fitted sheet over the boxsprings. This covers the springs but doesn't get in the way of the sides of the bed. I've been meaning to do this with my boxsprings but have yet to get to it!

Well, the house is as ready as it's going to get. DH is now home from Chicago and has his marching orders for the weekend. Backyard Susan and I are set to leave at 8 a.m. for the airport to get Doni! So let the games begin!!!!!

I did start my Churn Dash blocks about an hour and a half ago so you'll all be glad to know that I'm sure not leaving them until the last minute. :) I have all day tomorrow and five blocks are nearly finished.

I can't wait to meet the 99ers and wish I could meet more of you.

Dates for the Pacific International Quilt Festival are Oct 28-31, 1999 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The show managers have a web site (www.quiltfest.com) - don't know what is on it. They usually charge $2 for the show program if you didn't register for classes the previous year. (Same mgmt co also runs the Philadelpia show, which I thought was excellent last year). Hope all that go have fun - am going to Houston, so will not be hitting CA in Oct.

Welcome back, Kitty Kate, we missed you.

Faith - glad to hear Bill's family is on the way. How about a bell for him to ring when you've dozed off or are out of close earshot? Thinking of you both every day.

Computer froze up on me last Thursday night. Tried it in the am on Friday and it would come on but would not let me on line. DH made calls and tried things to no avail. Saturday morning he took it to the computer doc. It came home last night. Been trying to catch up eversince. Got back to Sunday but no further. I got a lot of work done. DD#2 and the DGKs stayed at a friend's house Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What bliss!!!! It was quiet and peaceful. The DH puttered around the yard and ran errands. I cleaned out 2 huge bins of scrap fabric. One bin is cotton scraps appropriate for quilting and the other bin is everything else. Cut batting for 4 wallhangings and pin basted them. Made a pillow and almost done a wall hanging on commission. Will take them to her tomorrow. She does my nails and I sew for her. No money exchanges hands. She does buy me lunch and coffees, etc. Now she wants me to decorate her house. I do home dec. and stenciling, etc. Too bad I won't get any money.
Been drinking water. Always have been a water lover. Started to drink more of it and less of other things. This potty thing is on my nerves. I think I should just wear a housedress with nothing under, so I can just squat and go. Feels like when I was pregnant.
Kitties missed me when I was in Redmond with Julie. Now they are all over me all the time. Sometimes it erupts into a cat spat in my lap. I usually wind up with a scratch or two myself. Love hurts!
Thanks to Carol who posted for me. It really is fun to have a BB quilter nearby. We want to get together and have show and tell. What fun!
Saturday morning I will be meeting Sandy Toes at the SeaTac airport (halfway between us)to meet JDB. Will let you know how things go. Wonder if that zany Dr. Ruth will show up?
Bill and Faith you are on my mind and in my heart.
Monica I am glad to see you are recovering. Things will be so much better now.

Kristine -- be sure to post about the Santa Cruz show (or anyone else in the area who knows). This is the first I've heard of it and I'd love to go. What about TerTer and Kathleen, or Rene? We could even get Susan in Fresno to come over?????? What fun.

Cindy R in AL -- Thanks for the suggestion. I have two pillow shams made, as well as the dust ruffle. My biggest problem, other than the fact that the mattress is much thicker (deeper) than the one I used for measurements when I started this quilt, is that the bed frame is a sleigh bed and the box springs and the way they're put together won't allow a dust ruffle. I'm still not done trying to figure this one out, but appreciate the ideas. The fabric on the back and the borders is a busy print with different blues. We had a ton of company this past weekend, so I had it on the bed with a navy blue dust ruffle and sheets so that it wouldn't show where the mattress stopped and the box spring started. I'll keep my "thinking cap" on though.

At lunch, I went with a co-worker over to a needlepoint shop near campus. I found a darling christmas stocking done like a crazy quilt. Think I'll get it and do some embellishments so it will look like velveteen, etc. Like I need another project other than the bunch I have going at this time.

Hope those of you in the HHH areas are able to do something to cool off.

Sondra- On your tulip quilt. What about putting a coordinated sheet/bedspread, etc under the quilt, sort of like a "slip" - it would look like a planned under layer. Or maybe you just need a dust ruffle and pillow shams? I used the layering technique and pillow shams with a quilt I made twin/double bed size so that I could use it on a queen size bed. Think of the bed as a wall - what do you need to "frame" the quilt - I’m sure you can come up with a solution. Cindy R. in AL

Subject: Rain, rain go away!!
E-mail Address: hartlaub@santanet.com

Good Morning Everyone!

I saw the weather last night, and it looks like the whole lower 48 is hot and dry. I wish I could send you our rain. We haven't had a dry day since I came home from vacation! The kids are driving me crazy because they only play in the rain for so long and then bring all the mud in.

I took another mystery quilt class on Sunday and expected to be finished earlier than the first one since it is a smaller quilt. Wrong! The pieces are much smaller this time and I still have to sew rows together. Only problem is my machine's tension was screwy( I used one of the shop's machine for the class) so I took it in for its annual checkup this week. While I am doing HQ and NT applique, I am almost going crazy because I can't sit at my machine for a bit each day!! Does anyone else with just one machine suffer like this when it goes to the doctors?

I am glad to see Monica post, and that she is keeping good spirits. IMHO your frame of mind directly affects your recovery speed.

All those leaving for Ohio, have a safe and fun trip. Be sure to pack one suitcase for quilting, one empty for the goodies and whatever else is available for your clothes and personal items. I surely wish I could be there too!

I am seriously considering going to the Pacific International QS at the end of Oct in Santa Cruz, CA. Does anyone else plan on going?

Well, I must ply my needle now. I do need to get a machine to keep me company while my other is away from home.

Bill and Faith, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs to you.

Subject: Kellie's Page and Catching up!
E-mail Address: sondra@cs.stanford.edu

Good morning everyone! I'm having a hard time catching up with all the postings since last week. Ugh. Take some time off, and you end up 'behind' again!

I have a ritual when I get into work. One of them is periodically looking at Kellie's page. Thanks Andy for posting new pictures. It was great getting to see faces that go with the names of the bb'ers who post. I'm sure there will be some from Ohio '99. Looking forward to those.

A friend's son got married a couple of weeks ago and his uncle visited from NJ. He and his wife went to Paducah and brought pictures of some of the beautiful quilts there. There was one in particular that looked like it was a brick window. Awesome!

We had a lot of company over this past weekend. Last Wednesday, I left work and drove up near Napa and picked up my 87-year-old aunt and drove her home to my Mom's house. Thursday I picked Apricots and put up 32 pints of Apricot Jam. I had already put up Boysenberry and Olallieberry jam. Yesterday, I used the day to pick red raspberries and made 16 pints of jam. Thought I'd try something different, so made nectarine jam and am anxious to try it. It makes a really pretty jam. Kind of a silly reason to make jam, but on well. DS came by the stove yesterday and says "Mom, what's with all the Jam". I looked at him and said, "well, you never know. We might have a blizzard this winter and I want to make sure we're prepared for lots of PB & J sandwitches". He got a funny look on his face and says, "Mom, we don't live in PA anymore, we live in Calif. It doesn't snow here". At any rate, we're all set and I'm sure I'll be giving lots away as Xmas gifts too.

It felt good to get back to work (I know, sounds stupid, eh?). But at least I can sit without someone wanting something, or needing a meal. We had 12 for dinner on Saturday and then again for Breakfast on Sunday before everyone left. Monday the kids saw the dentist. Got the announcement that both need braces. Oh joy! Good thing I'm going back to work full-time in August.

Friday, our new mattress was delivered and now I'm depressed. I worked so hard on a Tulip Quilt. Unfortunately, the measurements were for the old mattress and the new one is much deeper, so guess what? It doesn't fit! I think I'll put it away until we get a guest room and then put it on a double size bed. That should work, but I was so looking forward to having the tulip quilt on my bed. DH told the company we had "she doesn't need an excuse to make another quilt".

My thoughts are with you who have such hot and humid weather. Having lived in PA for 12 years, I remember what it was like. We've had unseasonable cool weather. Hope that your heat and humidity go away and soon!

Susan in NJ -- Good luck with the Hoffman Challenge. I'm sure it will be great. Make sure you post a picture on Kellie's page, okay?

For those of you who are going to Ohio '99, enjoy yourselves.

Have a great day everyone.

E-mail Address: sgrancio01@sprynet.com

Have been reading and laughing hysterically the last couple of days - time to post a little.

Ohio '99'ers - have safe trips, a fabulous time, keep cool (remember that all that water you're drinking will help keep you hydrated, too) - can't wait to hear about the adventures to be had.

Monica - glad you're feeling so well, better than your old self - bummer about missing Maine '99, but think of the $$ you can save for a foray to Pinetree or Keepsake in a month or 2. Bet there are also some smaller shows between now and leaf-peeper time. Yes, the water does run thru, but I find tha after some weeks of 2-3 qts a day, some adjustments occur and 'frequency' decreases a little.

Dr. Ruth is an example to all of us - a resourceful, bold, courageous woman - long may she fondle fabric and keep us ROTFPIMP

Have my Hoffman Challege project basted and partly quilted (it's not due to be received until Aug 20, LOL)- will finish and submit, even tho I don't think I quite accomplished the quilt I planned in my head. But, if will be finished and was a learning experience. Now, if I could think up another way to use the fabric, as I really do love it, tho it was a challenge to use. Guess that's why it was chosen, huh?
Have had a few evening breaks in the heatwave in the 'mountains' of NW New Jersey, but we're about to have a state-wide drought emergency declared it we don't get about 6" of rain.

Please remove the *** to reply.

Monica, Dahling,

Drinking lots of water gives you the opportunity to enjoy vistas you have never seen before (the inside of all the bathrooms in town), and the incentive to finally clean up your own bathroom! Heaven knows you'll be seeing a lot of the inside of your bathroom! But particularly during this brutal heat wave, keeping yourself well hydrated is worth all those trips to the bathroom. Just stock up on toilet paper.

Good to see you on the BBCP again, and that you're almost back to normal (whatever THAT is--LOL).

Hugs and lots of love to Faith and Bill. And Faith, just accept all the emails as messages of love. You don't need to answer all of them. Please! We don't want you to feel bad on account of unanswered emails. We know that you'd like to answer us, but understand when you don't. A big hug to everyone.

You mean you Serials actually made LISTS? Tell Sue to bring DS with her and he and your DD and mine can run out to the store for anything forgotten.
DS made mom a quilting table by opening up the kitchen table with leaf holes in the middle, sticking a rolling file cabinet in the center of the opening and then sawing 1 by whatever shelving to cover the spaces before and after the machine. I think he was hoping to get my clutter out of his side of the house ( we live in a house that has a mother in law section), but he's out of luck since the cable TV for HGTV is on his side of the wall and not
