Log Cabin Quilt

This is my first quilt, made from factory sheet scraps, cut up dresses, opportunity shop fabrics, and bits from my cupboard. Begun for my daughter during the 1980's, it was put away when her tastes changed to a more modern decor. I rediscovered it in 1996, and completed it using new fabric for the applique hearts and backing. It is now a "spare" quilt, although if the cat had her way it would belong to her permanently!
Blue buttons were used to hold the quilt together, and a friend hand quilted around each large square for me. The blocks were machine assembled on a calico foundation, the applique, backing and self binding were hand sewn.
When I made the quilt top, pink fabric was incorporated along the sides, as I ran out of light blue material. I was never really happy with the effect, but the fabric I bought for the applique hearts and backing helped to visually unify the quilt.
