Learn Mary's easy approach to meander stipple quilting to further

translate to the machine.

Personalize Your Art To Wear
This class will take the mystery out of making one-of-a-kind garments.
Making an original garment is easy by personalizing your design.
Students are asked to bring a "theme" idea that tells the world
something about themselves and the "stuff" to support it. Whatever you
bring, Mary will help you work out a garment plan that suits your style
and taste. A ton of information is presented in this class so you'll
come away with lots of ideas to complete your garment at home.
Sewing machine optional
Handwork - all levels.
NOTE - This class is also presented and recommended as a two-day or more workshop.
The Complete Stori Of Wholecloth Garments
You saw it on HGTV's Simply Quilts......here's your chance for hands on
instruction. Students will learn Mary's foolproof approach to garment
making; working with sections of fabric rather than cut out pattern
pieces. The morning practice session will concentrate on the skills of
meander hand stipple quilting, trapunto, and cording. This only looks
difficult! During the afternoon, Mary will help students adapt and
layout motifs for their own wholecloth garment paper "quilting
blueprint". Ideas translate to machine & projects requiring less time
are also offered.
Examples: The Wholecloth Garment Stori, AQS, 1998.
Handwork - experience in basic hand quilting.
Wearable Art - Designed To Be Quilted By Machine
Using the zig-zag stitch and a walking foot, students will begin to
create a wholecloth garment where quilting is the design. Ideal, easy
class for students new to machine quilting. (This is NOT free-motion
quilting!) Make a wearable garment in a few days following this super
easy approach. Stabilizing methods, construction tips, & embellishing
treatments are also covered. Instructor will provide many examples you
can recreate. It is NOT necessary to begin a project, students who
prefer to "play" with these methods are welcome!!
Examples The Wholecloth Garment Stori AQS, 1998.
Machine required - beginner & intermediate.
Mix or Match
Students will make their own "custom yardage" out of solid fabric by
stitching lines, motifs, & shapes inspired by a print fabric you bring
to class. The yardage will be used to make a vest or jacket, while the
print fabric can be incorporated as binding, piping, lining, cuffs,
skirt, etc. Learn to complement (Mix) or recreate (Match) a specific
fabric such as: a plaid, stripe, geometric, or floral pattern on a solid
color fabric using a variety of threads. Mary will bring lots of
examples to provide ideas. Easy immediate gratification workshop with
wonderful wearable results!
Examples - The Wholecloth Garment Stori, AQS, 1998.
Sewing machine required - all skill levels.
5. Here's an update bio too....I promise not to bother you for
awhile......thank you!
As therapy, Mary began teaching herself to quilt while recovering from back surgery in the mid - 1980's. She'd planned to return to her career of cooking school owner, instructor, and cookbook author, but after discovering the world of quilting and wearable art her energies were redirected.
Her work has appeared and won awards in numerous national shows. Mary
designed garments for the 1992, 1994, 1997, and 1998 Fairfield Fashion
Shows. Her garments and quilts have been shown in a variety of invitational and juried exhibits throughout the United States, and in Austria, Canada, England, and Japan. She's appeared on HGTV's "Simply Quilts" and "Sew Perfect" several times.
Mary has written articles and had work appear in: American Patchwork
Quilting, American Quilter, Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilts, Miniature Quilts, Threads, Pfaff Club Magazine, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilt Craft Magazine, Traditional Quilter, Wearable Crafts, Quilting Today, NQA's: The Quilting Quarterly, IQA's: Quilts, and numerous Rodale Press quilting books.
Her books are: The Stori Book of Embellishing, 1994, and The Wholecloth Garment Stori, 1998, published by AQS. The Stori Of Beaded Embellishment , 2001, by Martingale & Company.
Mary's work is often humorous, generously embellished, and displays fine
hand quilting. She loves the challenge of creating one-of-a-kind
fashions and quilts. Traveling worldwide to present lectures, workshops,
and fashion shows, as well as quilt tour host for Specialty Tours keeps
her motivated!
