Featured Teacher

Judy Mathieson began quiltmaking in 1973 and has been teaching since 1977. She teaches and lectures throughout the world.

Until Judy wrote n Mariner's Compass: An American Quilt Classic" in 1987, many people considered the Mariner's Compass block so hard ant complex that they put off making it . Her book offered patterns for J some simple styles

Mariner's Compass a is one of the oldest quilt block designs used in the United States. Judy showed how to make this magnificent block by just sewing straight lines, with no set-in comers. Also to use an applique circle in the middle o you do not even have to deal with eight seams coming together.

Mariner's Compass Quilts:New Directions

This book shows the wonderful variations that have arisen from this classic block. The wonderful projects and color photo's show both her work and her students.

This is Judy's second book on Mariner Cormpass Quilts, Judy shares even more stunning examples and projects abased on this popular quilt pattern.

Sixteenth-century cartographers made beautiful sailing charts with colorful compass roses to indicate the principal winds and lodestone (often a fleur-de-lis) to find the direction north on the magnetic compass. They let their imaginations run free on these designs, and so can you when creating a Mariner's Compass quilt. Judy shares information on design and drafting in easy steps. She gives 11 full size patterns for traditional 16 or 32 point compasses as well as designs based on the sparkling six spoked wheels of Costa Rican carts and other dramatic off center plans.
